What are people's opinion on the controls in Super Mario Land 1?

I played this game recently, and I found it a lot harder to control for some reason. I was looking into why it felt so weird for me online, and I saw this article:

I was just wondering if anyone found this accurate, or if it's something else, like the fact I played it on something other than the Game Boy (Wii U).
