How do you all feel about the fact that most episodes features multiple celebrity guests these days? I think it detracts from the cast's skill and can be very boring.
I love Ben Stiller, Robert DeNiro, and Alec Baldwin, for example, but I find myself losing interest whenever they show up. When Alec appears on screen I roll my eyes. Despite being very talented performers, they're consistently the weakest part of any episode. Especially Baldwin--his Trump just feels so unoriginal at this point, and largely relies on applause instead of laughter which strikes me as the opposite of good comedy.
It feels like we've entered into a new era of the show--one in which the cast is no longer of primary importance. Reminds me of how the musical guests used to be hip, but are now just popular. That was a big loss to SNL. I used to learn about great music from the show, but now it's just top 40. I always skip the musical performances at this point.
Do you feel the same? What do you think is going on? Is Lorne acting out of some type of desperation or financial pressure? Is NBC under new management? I wish he'd get these guest celebs out of the way so Heidi and Chris and Mikey and Ego and Melissa and the rest of the cast could shine and grow.
