How long did it take to find the right med combination for you?

Last year both my kids (18 & 21) were diagnosed bipolar 1. We were hoping a year into this their meds would be right, but we’re still playing the trial and error game trying to find the right med combo for each. Were we being too optimistic? How long did it take for you and your psychiatrist to find the right combination?
