Knife not working on Krauser RE4

So playing RE4 for the first time and have read everywhere that knifing Krauser is the best way to beat him. Been trying to do just that but every time I get close enough to him it locks me into a dodging QTE. At first I thought It was because I was too slow but I soon realized it actually is preventing me from knifing him in the frames leading up to the QTE. I'm playing on the PC HD version that came out in 2014 I think. Is there a chance they could have patched this?
