How do I stop being awful at drifting?

All that I've left in the base game is doing all the drift zones. I've done some and got three stars here and there, but mostly I'm stuck or two (or even one) star with no way of seemingly doing any better.

I've tried (with no success):

• Turning off the assists (ABS, Traction, Stability)
• Manual shifting, stuck in 2nd or 3rd gear
• Tapping/holding brake/e-brake
• Different cars, but mostly the Formula Drift ones

I see people doing incredible drift runs and I just want to do three stars in a drift zone.
