Heart rate works only on digital?

I have a xiaomi miband 3. When I use the peloton digital app, it asks me if I want to track my heart rate using that watch. But the bike can’t sync with that watch. Is this expected behavior? It seems weird that the digital app enables me to get metrics I can’t get with the bike’s tablet.
