Screen shows black rectangles only

Basically my screen only shows black rectangles or fades to black squares and full black. Happened once before when I let my laptop die and I tried to turn it back on but when I pressed the power button it went away. This time it seems to be stuck though. And the fan is running different. Please tell me what's wrong
