Is Star Trek "geeky/nerdy"?

For the perception of the mainstream public, how geeky is STAR TREK?

Is its fandom more geeky or nerdy than say that of Star Wars or Lord of the Rings? Is it less mainstream accepted than those 3?

I've come across quite a few different Trekkies in my life. Both my father and his father were fans. But I do wonder if it's the perception of Trek fans. They're always stereotyped as overweight white guys who may or may not be virgins living in their parent's basement. But there are loads of female fans or People of Color who really respect the legacy of Trek.
