A thought about censorship of porn.
A lifetime ago, I worked for a public library system. Internet filtering was fairly new and not particularly sophisticated at that time, so "breast cancer" would run afoul of the filter because...breasts. Or any frank, medically accurate information on the female body, contraception, gay and lesbian issues...the list went on and on. Some filters even went as far as to ban all non-Christian religious content, feminist websites, etc.
My employer refused to censor any access provided that the screens faced away from the children's area (computers in the children's area had internet filters), because they didn't want to eliminate access to useful information and there was no known way to ban only pornography without other information also being blocked.
Has filtering gotten better since the mid-1990's? I've never had reason or need to utilize it and my parents weren't sophisticated enough to even know that internet filters were an option when I was a kid. Is it actually possible now to restrict access to porn without denying access to non-pornography?
