Aim Assist Question

So I've been trying out something that has been batted around an awful lot from controller players, and that is "spamming" the ADS trigger to take full advantage of aim assist. I've found that while it helps center my shots when I slowly but repeatedly ADS at a distance, at close/mid range it doesn't seem to help very much. In fact my AR/SMG seems less accurate when I spam it very quickly.

My question is, has anyone figured out the correct formula for this? Quickly pressing it while firing doesn't seem to do me much good, but perhaps I'm going to fast, or doing something else wrong. Any input is much appreciated.
