System arriving tomorrow - First things to do/consider

I know this is a generic question, but I am hoping to get some insight on what are some of the first things I should do once I set up the system to get things like backups, maintanence, updates, or other tips running.

I know the -first- thing I will be doing is figuring out how to set up SSH/RDP protocol so I can just connect in from my PC, then moving on to installing Packages etc, but welcome any advice.

System is QNAP TS-451+ if that helps/matters.
