Canada Self Defence Laws?

I keep hearing so many rumours about this.

  1. “Equal Force.” So I keep hearing that if someone attacks you wth a knife, you can’t defend yourself with a machete, or if someone attacks you with a machete, you can’t use a gun. It seems crazy that I need to have some epic-action-film machete battle with someone bigger and stronger than me to defend my home and family for this; is that true?

  2. If I use a handgun to defend my home, it’s illegal and I’ll be charged as it’s a restricted firearm; is that true?

Thanks!
