Question on vocal mixing

Hey everyone, I got a question on vocal mixing. I'm working on a track and I'm completely puzzled how to go about it. I was wondering how do you approach it - do you mix the vocals in the same project as your track (with all the VSTs and all) or do you bounce out the instrumental and the vocal tracks separately and mix them in a completely blank project?
