My homie tends to over do it and we’re all worried about him. What should we do?
Wassup guys. First off just wanted to say I love this sub. Y’all are always supportive, educational, entertaining, but more than anything else you don’t judge. That’s what I admire most about this sub. Anyway, to the real deal. Probably gonna put a TLDR at the end cuz this may get long.
So my buddy (19) does way too much and I’m (20) genuinely worried about his health, mentally and physically. He’s one of my closest friends and I don’t want him to do something stupid and get himself hurt or killed. He stays with me and my roommate pretty regularly (probably one or two nights a week), and every time he’s here he’s always stumbling around, making a mess, and constantly telling us how fucked up he is. It’s not just with us, he does this normally if not every day. We just notice it most when he’s here cuz we see the climax at the end of the day. We’ve all noticed he goes too hard and we’ve tried telling him but he doesn’t seem like he wants to fix anything. A normal day for him includes weed, coke, xans, sometimes lean, sometimes alcohol, microdosing acid (which to my knowledge he hasn’t done in a while), occasionally ecstasy, and god knows what else that he doesn’t tell us about.
One of the things I’ve noticed with him is that he does as much as he can all at once to just get to his peak as fast as possible. I don’t know if that’s better or worse, but when I smoke weed I like to pace myself and enjoy the climb just as much as the peak. He doesn’t do that. He just slams it and hopes for the best. Usually he’ll start with bars, taking a few at a time and dropping a couple more into a drink. Then when he bars out, he’ll do a bump of coke to stay up and hang with us. Then he’ll realize he’s too awake from the coke and sip some lean and get too fucked and do more coke and the cycle continues. It seems like he doesn’t know his limits and he just burns through as much as he can.
Now normally I’m a deep believer in “to each, their own”. If this is what he enjoys then he should enjoy it. But the problem is when he’s sober or coming down he’ll tell everyone about how he knows he’s causing a bunch of damage. We have a weekly conversation (that he initiates) about how he knows his habits are gonna kill him before he’s 25 and how it’s ruining his relationship with his parents. We’ll talk about his funeral and all sorts of other really cheerful things of the same kind. He says he knows he should stop and he could any time if he wanted to, but he doesn’t want to. He says he doesn’t see the value in stopping, and I believe he’s lost the value of life itself. This conversation is a regular one, and each time he’ll forget that we had the conversation the week prior and launch back in at the beginning like we’ve made zero progress.
So what should we do? I came to you guys cuz I didn’t know who else would be better to ask given the situation. All of his friends, including myself, are all concerned for his health. We’ve tried recommending therapists, rehabilitation centers, even pushed him to go to a narcotics anonymous meeting but he brushes everything off saying it’s a waste of time and money since it won’t work for him. He’s gone once, maybe twice, before to rehab and said it did nothing for him. We’re all getting desperate since it’s getting worse with him every week, and we’re approaching our final option which would be going and talking to his mom about everything he does. She’s aware he smokes weed with us and doesn’t really care, but there’s no way she knows about everything else he does or how often/much he’s doing it. I’m not sure what exactly that would do, but at this point doing nothing would be worse.
Any and all advice is appreciated. I don’t want to lose one of my closest friends to drugs, whether that’s because of a damaged relationship or because of an extremely premature death. We’re out of ideas and running out of time.
TLDR: My friend does way too many drugs at once and we’re all concerned for his health.
