Why do Gurung’s do cousin marriage?

I understand that Gurung’s do cousin marriage due to traditions. But what is the reason for it? Also with modernisation and scientific fact that cousin marriage is detrimental for future generations. Why do most Gurung’s still opt to do it? Also what are the opinions of other Nepali people on this tradition?
