My second C:I mod/asset apocalypse: stupid mod questions from a guy with a subscription problem
tldr; i'm dumb and don't know how mod assets work, see below for questions
I have a problem.
Every time I browse Reddit, this subreddit pops up and wonderful people post wonderful things, usually screenshots of their wonderful cities. Sometimes, they even provide a mod list for them. In my hubris, I almost always subscribe to everything because hey, more stuff is always better (and the modding community for C:S is insanely good).
Problem: I don't really understand what I'm downloading, content-wise, half the time. I subscribe to building sets. I get prop lists. I get mods (although I get what most of those do, thankfully). I get anything I can get my grubby hands on.
As a result, Cities Skylines runs like ass, and the Loading Screen Mod reports thousands upon thousands of errors, and C:S occasionally throws up some interesting scripting errors too. I have similar buildings stuffed away in dozens of random tabs (a school as a unique building? sure! A church as a park? why not!). It takes me minutes to load C:S on my brand new PC with a screaming SSD.
Here's how I play the game; I find a cool map, I build the city more or less organically and lose myself in interesting traffic problems. Eventually, if/when I ever run out of space, that's when I start re-working interesting neighborhoods to look prettier. The last part almost never happens, realistically. I almost never plop down individual signs or props, unless I'm designing a city park.
So, mod/asset questions:
- Is there a tool that will analyze the error logs of the Loading Screen Mod that will help me resolve any missing asset errors?
- Is there an external tool that can organize/analyze mod problems and find solutions for them? Something like LOOT for Skyrim mods (optimizes build order, finds errors in scripts, incompatibilities, etc)
- Prop assets (signs, rubbish bins, billboards, HVAC units, etc) - do I need to download these if I'm not planning on using Prop Anarchy to plop them anywhere? If I download a building asset, does it automatically come with whatever props it needs? If not, how do I know what it's missing?
- What the hell is a RICO asset, and does it differ from a Growable asset? I'm only interested in getting buildings that can grow under the right conditions, not stuff I'm going to place by hand (exception: churches and universities, but see below)
- Is there a way to force-organize mods to be in a specific category? I have maybe 30-40 church/mosque/synagogue assets in my game, but they're a mix of health clinic, cemeteries, unique buildings, schools, parks, and landmarks. I'd love to just have a tab that says "churches".
I'm sorry for the dumb questions, but it finally struck me as I subscribed to yet another 40 billion assets that I really have no frickin idea what I'm doing.
Thanks for your help :)
