Has there been any mention at all of why DE made this choice? Do we need an Old Mate tier item (like the MOA weapons Legs sells) to damage the spiders, or is this just gating for the sake of gating?

Heists will probably be as endgame as it gets for now.
Of course there is a high requirement tied to that.

You can go to fortuna with 2 hours created account. The choice to make the height fight requirement last rank of Fortuna make sense and prevent people with 0 experience to matchmaking with people that farmed for the whole month the new content.
I wish they implement some kind of layer for people joining with a least minimum requirement equipment to new content and prevent the typical no amp 2 dude joining tridolon fight.

Should prolly try helping those 'typical' players out with advice then :P Its not exactly all common knowledge. I myself have had to do extensive searching on how best to farm the Eidolon among other things on these forums. They might put a requirement on Cetus someday and even then players who dont know better could reach higher tiers without actually having the know-how or the most efficient set up. Exact same can be said of Fortuna. A standing requirement is a weak band-aid for that position.
