Why does Phillipe live with them again?

He was sent there after his dad died. It's not clear as far as I know exactly how anyone who lives there has a connection to his mom, just that they're in semi-regular contact with her.

It's true that Phillipe needs strong male role-models... and between the three of them, Lyle/Teodor/Cornelius add up to a near-sufficient surrogate!
