An open letter to the /r/Flutter modteam about merging with /r/FlutterDev

Announcement

Hey,

I'm here on behalf of r/FlutterDev, hoping to get your attention since you've never replied to any of our PMs, modmails, or reports.

Having two subreddits for identical purposes just splits this already tiny community further. Here's a quick comparison of both subreddit's advantages:

r/FlutterDev:

  • Was established first.
  • Has 4.5x more members.
  • Has Google connections.
  • Has an active mod team.
  • Is an official community.
  • Is partnered with the Flutter discord.
  • Is growing faster.

r/Flutter:

  • Has more people stumble onto it if they search for "Flutter" on Reddit.
  • ???

We're proposing we merge these 2 communities. You can both join r/FlutterDev and the Discord as moderators, and help us provide an environment for Flutter discussion.

We would redditrequest this sub, but as u/aQutie is active on his other moderated sub r/Angular2 (and nowhere else...), it won't pass.

New posts to this subreddit would be prevented, but all existing content would remain, along with a link in the sidebar / description to the main subreddit. Can the r/Flutter mods please send us a modmail as soon as possible, or PM me!

History:

  1. r/Flutter & r/FlutterDev were created a long time ago (before the framework), made private, and forgotten about.
  2. u/KingBaal redditrequested r/Flutter unsuccessfully, so instead redditrequested r/FlutterDev a year ago, and with the help of the other mods it became a bustling community. We also opened a Discord that has grown to 2k+ members.
  3. Both r/FlutterDev and our Discord became official, listed as communities on Flutter.io.
  4. r/Flutter was reopened 7 months ago by u/zirconiX9, who made a page of posts in a few days to kickstart the community, then added u/aQutie and disappeared.
  5. An announcement post was made, where the only comments are asking why the subreddit exists.
  6. The previous post was deleted, and made again, with the same questions being asked.
  7. The new moderator also disappeared from the subreddit, and seemingly hasn't touched it since. Spam is never removed.

Tl;dr: r/FlutterDev is much more active and far larger. Having 2 communities is pointless, we'd like to merge.

Redditors can force merge too, if we just shift to r/FlutterDev..

Why does this subreddit exist?

What's the advantage to having a second flutter subreddit? It seems confusing to me.

If possible we should merge the two subreddits.

Surely most people who are a member of one are also a member of the other? At least that's the case with me. The only posts I see on r/Flutter are advertisements for r/FlutterDev...

Merge it and keep the name Flutter

Can't rename subreddits I'm afraid.

You move to r/flutter. Contact u/aQutie

1
JakeSteamOP•

We've been trying to contact him for 3 months. Also, r/flutterdev is over 4x the size, can't just "move" those thousands of users!

RxFORTRAN•

I vote setting r/Flutter to read-only and directing users to r/FlutterDev ... Hope u/zirconiX9 & u/aQutie respond!

Merging makes sense

Merge it! And FlutterDev name is better, respectivly to developer community.

Subscribed to both. Unsubscribing from r/Flutter

A good idea! I first stumbled upon r/flutter and then found r/flutterdev. I would recommend making flutter the main reddit, and archive flutterdev. The name is better, and its the first place users go.

Er, I'd disagree with your suggestion. In the "advantages" list above, r/FlutterDev is moderated, has connections, is much larger, is an official community, etc... So far, the mods of this subreddit have been unreachable.

Because of these reasons, I proposed making r/Flutter direct users to r/FlutterDev. Over time people would stop stumbling across it as r/FlutterDev continued to grow much faster (as it is now).

I think u/saltupz is suggesting keeping all the benefits by renaming r/FlutterDev to r/Flutter once the merge is approved. Basically swap the names. That way the community keeps the benefits of both.

Subreddits cannot be renamed, I'm afraid. Once it's r/flutterdev, it's r/flutterdev forever!

Merge it but rename it to just r/Flutter

Can't rename subreddits I'm afraid.

Merge it and keep the name Flutter. It sounds like a official name and it is easier to find.

Our redditrequest for the sub got (rejected) again, but if the first guy is inactive for 6 more weeks we can claim the sub...

How bout now, friend?

1
JakeSteamOP•

We requested it, as he'd been inactive for 2 months. A few weeks later though, he left a single comment in the other sub he moderates.

So, now we wait for him to be inactive for 2 months again...
