I think you nailed it.
I like how he’s looking off at something. The birds add interest to the background creating a believable atmosphere.
I like how i feel some tension wondering what he’s looking at.
Yeah — really well-done. Lovely composition and visual interest.
Great photo. Maybe make him little bit brighter?
This!
I really like the composition and the birds in the background. Feels like it gives a real sense of time and place. I would work on the edit though to make the man rowing pop a little bit more.
There are a lot of things to like about this photograph. All lines lead to the head which is looking away. Great composition.
Don’t think you could have done anything better. I love it.
It's a great picture. I would have loved if the camera wasn't so close to the person or if you were using a wider focal length to make some part of the boat visible. That would have also acted like leading lines to direct one to the person at the center.
I agree. I should've included more of the boat in the frame but from where I was sitting on the boat, this was as wide as I could go. Definitely gonna keep that in mind though.
ya I'd agree with editing out the left most bird that's half cut out. personally I would not make him brighter...the edit is pretty good but if anything maybe play around a bit more with contrast by adding very slight detail to the background and blackening the blacks in the dude. see if you like it any better if so, cool...if not, revert.

I’d consider making this 16:9 to emphasize on the line where the water crosses the mountain. You think that’s a good idea?

I just said “oh my god that’s good” outloud. Maybe just up the contrast
Thanks so much! Duly noted.
Great. Maybe you can try editing out the leftmost bird, which is cut off by the frame. It somehow draws my visual attention without rewarding me when I look at it.
Never chop limbs. Goes for birds too! Haha
Okay I’m seriously asking because I’m a noob and I want to improve at portraits: in a shot like this how would you get around chopping off the legs in the frame? Wouldn’t that increased FOV down low take away from the scene?
Im not a portrait expert, but that is just one of those things that you have to balance. You have to make the determination if getting them in the shot will alter the field of view or focal length to a point that is no longer desirable.
Also remember that all these photography "rules" are not really rules and more like guidelines, and guidelines that can and should be broken if the scene calls for it.
That’s a valid concern and like our buddy said in another comment, it depends on the situation. My personal minimum is not to chop forearms, elbows or feet (not leg, but feet, like half a shoe)
I'm surprised I didn't notice it. Good point. Now that you've pointed it out, it does seem distracting.
