I haven't had a chance to listen to the music yet, but this is a paper by a Fields Medalist explaining how to generate music from the cohomology of hyperelliptic curves.

Ooof, I'm not sure this "music" is very good.

Although I DO like the idea of using advanced math to do music theory. I ran into a paper once on using scheme theory to analyze chord progressions in Scriabbins work.

I feel like the thing that's happening here is "powerful" mathematical tools have good explanatory power for lots of complex patterns. When we turn them towards something like music we are able to fit the discrete transitions and structures there into some mathematical model which can predict or rephrase them.

I kind of look at it as language translation -- there really isn't much surprise, unless you were extremely pigeonholed in your understanding of one or the other.

Do you have a reference for that paper? It sounds pretty interesting

I really hope this isn't the first step in us losing another great mathematician down the crankish rabbithole. Recreational math is fine of course, I just hope he's not about to Atiyah us with some purported proof of RH based on music theory.

Can't tell if joking or not, but I dont see any indication of that in his late work, maybe he's been more 'creative' but his works with Consani are interesting from what I can understand and they give me this impression that this is work of people enjoying math

Half-joking. I agree that his work is solid, but I've heard him talk about his approach to RH a few times and it's struck me that he's really hoping it will work out to the point where I'm not sure his head is all the way level.

I hope this is what it appears to be: just some good natured fun. But putting it together with some of his comments, I'm slightly concerned.

Not that I fully grasp the math part of the paper, but Im completely lost in the music theory part. I kinda like how the music sounds

I love music but I can’t read sheet music LOL. Can anyone play it for me? :3

There is a video with music linked from the paper.

Oh! LOL
