those are pretty cheap from ebay, around $4.

You might need your own screw

I've never looked into the 3d model for these....any major differences?

Yes. Major differences. I 3D printed a few 3.5s for my r710 & r510. The dell ones and even the unbranded knock-offs are much more sturdy and will lock into place. The 3D printed models that I’ve found are pretty delicate and are basically just there to get the drives lined up with the back plane. I always feel like I have to handle them pretty gently.

3d print one, put a piece of sturdy tape on the drive it self to help remove it w/o breaking tray.

I did this for a little bit while I was waiting for a pair of trays for my R620, the drive was essentially floating in the bay, and it worked fine.

Cooling may be a bit un-balanced if you have real trays for other drives right next to/above/below the drive w/o a tray unless you have a blank to cut down on the airflow (least resistance path for air, less pressure to move air across other drives with full trays).
