Vegetables!

Most cities I've lived in had a solid place to buy all kinds of veggies cheap. Asian markets, Hispanic markets, underground farmers markets, etc. Cheap veggies, unique veg, and cheap. Any ideas?

Edit: going to check out Ken's market today.

Check out Ken's on Plainfield, or in Alger Heights

Ken's is the bomb. They have a great butcher and amazing spices for cheap too.

I recommend Ken's, Horrock's, and Fresh Thyme, as well as many of the Hispanic markets, but I actually get most of my produce during the cold months at Aldi and recently at Bridge Street Market. Meijer usually has good produce, but can vary from store to store. I avoid Family Fare for produce because it isn't that great of quality and it's super overpriced. I also avoid Wal-Mart because it's Wal-Mart; why go there when there are so many better options.

Since GR is surrounded by some of the most productive and diverse cropland in the state and nation, it only makes sense to shop local during the growing season. One of the things that my wife and I like best about living here is the farmer's markets, roadside stands and you pick farms. In addition to the Fulton Street Farmer's Market, which we frequent on a weekly basis, I also love Under the Pines on Alpine near 7 mile and Brechtings on 6 Mile west of Alpine. The latter has you pick fruits and and tons of different types of veggies as well as pre-picked. Most suburbs and towns have their own farmer's markets as well. For cherries, I recommend Rasch's in Marne. For blueberries and strawberries, Versluis is only about 10 minutes from Downtown. Venroy in Coopersville also has great blueberries.

If you've never picked your own food or purchased it directly from the farmer, I highly recommend it. Check out these two websites for more info http://kentharvesttrails.org or http://www.fruitridgemarket.com/farm-markets/

It’s starting to turn into a Midwest chain but fresh thyme is another solid choice for fresh produce and organic products without breaking the bank. I’d say best bang for your buck is probably horrocks IMO

Yeah I haven't been to horrocks yet. I am trying that this week. Thanks!

I like fresh thyme when i have a few extra bucks in the pocket to spend. They always have a few interesting things to try. Like whole foods without the extra $$$$

Dead on! Horrocks usually has couple good specials overall best “market” type selection around

If you go on Wednesdays, you get sales from the week before and the upcoming week, so twice the number of things on sale.

A Dong market off of 36th and division has some pretty good stuff and so does Dong Hung right across the street from there.

Yeah, repeat on the Ken's aspect but they can be hit or miss on the produce. Their meat prices are the bomb though. Not sure what kind of neighborhood you live in but you could always try to organize a swap of sorts.

My parents live in the suburbs and my dad is literally trying to get rid of buckets upon buckets of zucchini, winter squash, asparagus, etc. when it's the season.

He's pretty cool, to be honest. If you live on the NE side of GR, I guarantee you've seen him walking. He's friends with everybody.
