It's so weird to hear these early versions, since I'm so used to the album. You can tell the bones and the lyrics are there, but there's something missing structure-wise or melody-wise. It's crazy how the few tweaks she did turn this (kind of) average set into my favorite album of the past few years. Makes me wonder how many artists out there are just a few tweaks away from an unforgettable album.

This is wonderful.

It's so interesting to see how these songs evolved. I couldn't believe I was hearing The Knock for a moment there. I'd almost describe some of these songs as Painted Shut songs that were released from Get Disowned. There's some kind of definite difference between her style of singing and songwriting that changes between those two albums... I don't know enough about music to describe it, but I feel it.

Thanks so much for sharing this.

Top Bunk is also super fascinating to me! Listening to it, I don't think it has an analogue on the final album; its lyric about "windows painted shut", though, indicates that it was intended to go on there and definitely informed the process surrounding it. Based on stuff I remember reading in interviews, I have a guess. They mentioned not having a ton of time to record Painted Shut, so perhaps the song wasn't working out when it came time to record and ended up being cut. Tbh though it may not have even made it that far; I remember reading something about how the actual dog story portion behind "Bark Your Head Off, Dog" was at one point in time a full song by itself that wasn't working out and later ended up being tied into the storytelling on Look of Love. Perhaps we have a similar situation going on here. Of course I could always be full of shit here haha.

Also, I find it funny that Top Bunk was the only (? could be wrong on this...) song on there that she gave a title to at the ti
