Stop blaming Chris Wallace pt. 3

SHITPOST

Y'all asked for it (you didn't, but, here it is anyways)

We’re back at it for part 3

Chris Wallace is still a top 5 GM in the league and doesn’t deserve heat

Let me explain in detail, why the Grizzlies are struggling this season. And then, let me explain why Chris Wallace is not to be blamed for that struggle.

I can sum up 2 reasons as to why we suck right now:

JB Bickerstaff and Marc Gasol

Before the season started, I had high hopes for JB. He talked a really good game, and the start of the season backed that up. He was coaching like hell. But then, something changed. Two of our new acquisitions, Shelvin Mack and Garrett Temple, started being less productive then they were before, and the losses started piling on. We were losing because JB kept giving minutes to unproductive players, instead of giving minutes to productive players. For instance, let’s look to January 2nd’s game against the Detroit Pistons. Garrett Temple plays 37 MINUTES and goes 2 for 8 from the field, with half of his shots being THREES. He scored 7 points. That same game? Wayne Selden scores 5 points in 5 minutes and doesn’t miss a basket. Why the hell did he not get more minutes? Why are we not giving the hot handed players more time on the court?

When Shelvin Mack and Garrett Temple started being unproductive, JB had a hard time shortening their minutes. However, after a while, we saw Shelvin play less and Jevon Carter started playing more. But, this whole season, GT has remained the same. Same old 32 minutes a game just to have poor shot selections. You know, it’d be one thing if he was a Tony Allen type player, one who is a liability on offense but phenomenal on defense. But GT is a liability on both of those. Why does he continue to get tons of minutes? He’s played 13 seasons with 7 different teams. Theres a reason he can’t stay on a team for very long. He’s obviously not that good, so why is it we bring him here and give him star-caliber minutes? Give those minutes to the players with the hot hand. Give those minutes to players far more deserving.

Now before, I mentioned that Shelvin was declining in production. Recently, he’s actually been kinda good. So, give him more minutes. But seriously, JB Bickerstaff, quit playing Garrett Temple. Yes, he’s better than McLemore and Davis, but he’s not worthy of 32 minutes a game.

My other reason for why we suck right now is Marc Gasol. The man is fine on offense. Good offensive player. But he is by no means the same defensive center he once was. He’s so slow and doesn’t look like he’s that interested in the game. Plus, he’s 34. He’s getting older, and his production is going to keep declining.

So, to Grizzlies fans, if you want us to be better, we need to move Gasol for potentially Hassan Whiteside, like some trade rumors have said, and then fire JB. Yes, that’s yet another coach gone, but his rotations are a great reason for why he should be fired. There is no reason for why GT should be getting the minutes he gets. Marc needs to have more heart, and JB needs to started giving minutes to the deserving players (Ivan Rabb and Yuta Watanabe for example)

NOW, back to why you shouldn’t blame Wallace.

What has he done wrong? Like honestly? Some of the reasons i’ve heard are because he wants to trade Marc/Mike, because he traded MarShon/Wayne for Holiday, because he hired JB, because of the Chandler Parsons drama and because of all the other aforementioned reasons (check out Stop blaming Chris Wallace pt. 2 if you want)

Let me just go over some of the examples I just listed.

Trading of Marc/Mike:

I love this. I think people aren’t comprehending the genius that’s going on here. If you come out and say that you’re putting Marc Gasol on the trade block (which is what’s happening, they wanna trade him cuz he’s trash), what kind of GM is gonna wanna take him? They’re just gonna say “Oh you’re trying to get rid of your headache.” However, when you come out publicly and say that you’re putting Marc AND Mike on the trading block, then GMs are thinking “Oh, Grizz are just cleaning house. Theres no problems there.”

I guarantee you, Mike Conley will stay a Grizzly. They’re only saying that Mike is available so that Gasol is more enticing. It really makes sense when you think about it.

Another reason for why people want Wallace gone is the trade that he made that sent Brooks and Selden (plus 2 second rounders) to Chicago for Justin Holiday. Yes, that’s a lot of assets for a dude that averages 11.6 points a game. But, theres a reason. We didn’t trade for Holiday because he averages 11.6. That was just an addition. We traded for him because he averages 2 steals a game. He’s a really good defensive presence, the common theme of this years Grizzlies roster. Sure, so far he’s been unproductive, but he’s been with us for 10 games. Give him some time to grow and get adjusted to our pacing, and i’m sure he will thrive. And plus, what did we give up that was so important? Wayne Selden? Yes, I know I mentioned earlier that he had 5 points in 5 minutes, but that was just him having a hot hand that night. Wayne Selden never developed into the player we wanted him to be. MarShon never kept his streak from last year going. Both players were also reasons for why we are in this slump. They never really contributed to the point that could of got us out of the losing streak (albeit, JB probably never gave them the chance to get us out). And 2 second rounders? Come on man. Yall are way too high on second round picks. They barely ever convert to good players, and when they do it’s just out of pure luck. I’d rather take a chance on a good promising defensive 2 guard than a couple of second round picks that have like a 5% chance of converting into an actual contributor.

Another reason:

You can’t blame him for hiring JB. We all would have done the same.

If you try to sit there and convince me that his press conference after the drafting of Jevon and Jaren wasn’t promising, you’re lying. Right before, everyone was skeptical. Even I was. But he sold me. He sold a lot of people. He made it sound like heaven. And, it was. We started the season 12-5. We were doing exactly what JB said we were going to do; Grit n Grind with some offense. But then, shit changed. People started losing productivity. Tempers started flaring. Casspi and Temple fought. Shit went down, and JB is to blame. Get your boys together. Be a leader. You’re the head coach bro. Take over. But seriously, you can’t blame JB on Chris Wallace. Yes, he brought him here, but everything was promising until those players started declining.

Final reason for why you can’t blame Chris Wallace. Then I’m done, I swear.

Chandler Parsons was good. Good enough for a max deal? Debatable. But, that’s a different point. Fact of the matter is, Chris Wallace (and honestly everybody at the time) saw Chandler Parsons as the missing piece. We saw him as the key to our struggles. Was he? We won’t know. His knees won’t let us know the answer.

I mean dude, yall can’t be serious. Y’all shit on Wallace for not playing Parsons. It’s not up to him! His fuckin knees are NON EXISTENT. Oh, you say the doctor cleared him? He’s been cleared about 20 million times, and every time it’s the same! He plays 4-5 games, goes out for “knee soreness” and misses for a while. We know how this chapter ends so why does everyone want Wallace to keep reading it? Turn the damn page. Move on. Chandler Parsons looked good at the time, but injuries stopped us from really knowing whether or not he was the piece he was supposed to be. This isn’t Wallace’s fault.

And yeah, Parsons was “injury-prone” before the deal, so yes, Wallace should of realized this (he probably did. $20 says that someone in the FO made the decision over Wallace. go read part 2 to learn about that). But, you will never really know if someone is going to be bad or not until you play them. I’m sure his previous injuries were taken into consideration. Even then, what does it really matter? We gave a dude money because we wanted him to pick us over Portland. Yall act like if we gave him less money, we could of made some blockbuster signing with the remaining cash. Come on now, Memphis isn’t a big free agent destination. We save just a little bit on the Parsons deal (or we dont make the deal at all) and who do we sign?

Bottom line:

Chris Wallace has put the pieces there. JB Bickerstaff has failed to bring those pieces together.

Bring on the downvotes :)

How is Chris Wallace a top 5 NBA GM when your team is 2nd to last in the conference standings?

The celtics were bad for a minute too

The top 5 thing is a bit of a joke. It was an old gag on this sub. I still believe hes one of the better GMs.

“Chris Wallace is a Top 5 GM” is a great take. Stand by it.

Edit

Here we go: Chris Wallace is a Top 5 GM. He signed 3 top 25 players going into the 16-17 season in one of the smallest markets. Not his fault the players couldn’t stay healthy.

1

IMO these are the top 5 GMs in the league. I don't know much about basketball, so I ranked them according to how sexy they are.

  1. Chris Wallace

  2. Ed Stafanski of the Pistons

  3. Andy Elisburg of the Heat

  4. Travis Schlenk of the Hawks

  5. Ernie Grunfeld of the Wizards

Hey Rex remember when we argued last year about how Carter Jr was better than Doncic and he was just this unathletic white kid? Just thought I’d remind you that your take there was horribly wrong and so is this one.

13
_manoftheyear_•

Damn somebody actually said that shit? I mean I’ll be the first to admit I was wrong about JJJ. I didn’t like him. But honestly it was mostly because I was salty that we didn’t do anything to get Doncic from Atlanta because I thought he was clear cut the better player. Year 1 he’s clear cut the better player, ceiling is debatable, but in the end what matter is we got the best player on the board and I was wrong so I’m happy.

But someone ACTUALLY thought Carter was better than Doncic? Shit.

7
37smsPau•

Eh as much as i love to hate on the front office, there's nothing we could've reasonably done to get doncic without full control of pick (and that is something you can actually blame the FO for).

2
RexLegoOP•

Bro were like 40 games into the season, relax. Carter is hooping the same way Doncic is. Two different positions.

-6
37smsPau•

The same way? Tf?

Carter is nice but pretending he's anywhere close doncic right now is foolish

9
RexLegoOP•

Doncic is better right now, but Carter is close too. Extremely underrated center. Doncic just gets a lot of media attention.

-2
37smsPau•

He's nice but he's not close. Carter is likely gonna end up 2nd team all rookie, doncic is the clear favorite for ROY.

Come on man, how can you honestly believe this? The Parsons signing was a bad move, even at the time. Nobody else wanted to pay him and we went and did it anyway. I remember he was ridiculed here on reddit and even in the media when he said he wanted max dollars and Chris Wallace was the stupid man who did it. By the time we signed, we had already 50+ million dollars per year tied in both Mike and Marc. So with that signing we threw away our cap flexibility for the next 4 years. And we invested it in a player who had two season ending injuries the years before. He was already talked as a bad locker room guy, that prefered banging instagram models and partying to basketball.

How can you say the roster was well constructed when we have virtually no ball handlers other than Conley, Kyle Anderson (in spurts) and Jevon (who has inconsistent minutes)? Who is the players who can penetrate one on one to breakdown opposing defenses? Where are the shooters? Do we even have one guy who is considered a shooter? Why didn't we trade for Kyle Korver instead of Justin Holiday to space our floor? Look at the overpay for Justin Holiday. Wasn't one second enough? No one was going to oubid us.

Then, look at the draft history. I mean, it's laughable. Were are our first round picks? I get that we can't always hit on a second round pick, but on a first? I mean, never? Not one single player? And you say he is not to blame, that it is the coach's fault? They are both horrible at their jobs.

I can't even begin to phantom how you could think that this man is a top 5 GM in the league. He is a bottom 5 GM in the NBA, and I'm being kind.

What you've just posted is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever read. At no point in your rambling, incoherent shitpost were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this subreddit is now dumber for having read it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

i love when people result to insults when they can't come up with an actual response to something somebody else made. grow up dude. if you wanna sit there and disagree, then explain your reasoning. quit being a sheep.

-2
GATFType 2 Diabetes•

Sheep? Mate I've been on this sub for six years. You think the fire wallace meme is anything new? Well it isn't. It's only got traction now because the team is facing an inevitable rebuild which could have been handled better. Stop defending incompetence. Stop writing off minor assets. Stop blame shifting. Stop with the shitty, humourless argument.

3
RexLegoOP•

Inevitable rebuild? Why the hell do we have to rebuild? Why blow it up? We were 1st in the west at the start of the season for a reason. What changed? The declining of players and JBs failure to sit those players. Change that and we'll win again. Come on dude, yall make this shit harder than it has to be.

1
GATFType 2 Diabetes•

Go watch our season opener against the Pacers. Even in the short stint where we were 1st in the West, it was clear then that we weren't going to hold that spot. Everyone here was optimistic that we could make the playoffs and convey the pick, knowing full well that we would still be facing a rebuild in the near future. With our recent performance that near future is now.

I actually agree with a lot of this. It all stems back to the Parsons signing, but the roster is the main reason we are trash right now. Wallace, overall, has done a decent to good job of keeping the ship afloat. And I think we just got lucky in the acquiring of Tony, Zbo, and Marc and finding out the culture of the Memphis Grizzlies. The Parsons thing will always rub me he wrong way and honestly, that should be the reason why Wallace should get fired, if he was to.

1

This thread could've been a lot more toxic than it was, i'm proud of yall

That being said this argument is foolish, especially at this point. Please stop.

1

It's not foolish at all. Everything that i've said makes sense. Agree to disagree; I know we've argued a lot about the topic. But in the end, I think just because i'm going against the norm people wanna disagree without even considering the possibility that I might actually be right

-3
toftrWallace Delendus Est•

Your defense of the Holiday trade is preposterous. Chris Wallace has time and time again proven to be the face of one of the worst front offices in basketball, even if he’s not completely to blame

3
RexLegoOP•

Preposterous how? You call him one of the worst faces, but look at the good he's done. Put together a unit that brought us to the WCF. Put together a unit that made the playoffs 7 straight seasons. His all-star center starts going downhill, and his coaches start going wack, and we blame him? It's so easy to blame Chris Wallace.

Rockets were in a slump at the start of the season, did anyone ever blame Daryl Morey? How are we going to sit here and blame Chris Wallace for this? He put the pieces there, what else can he do?

0
toftrWallace Delendus Est•

You don’t give up two seconds just because a guy averaged *1.8 steals a game while playing massively inflated minutes, especially when he was brought in to help with spacing. Holiday is averaging less than one 3PM on under 24% from 3. You especially don’t give up a young player with some upside (plus another player) and two seconds for a 29-year-old player that either doesn’t fit your current roster or your coach that you hired after refusing to conduct a search doesn’t know how to use.

Wallace has been the face of the front office responsible for putting together the worst consecutive rosters since the stretch from ‘07-‘09, and he wasn’t actually in charge during the WCF season, meaning he can’t be lauded for that season.

Not conducting a coaching search is refusing to conduct one of the most important facets of being a General Manager. No other NBA franchise would’ve held onto JB without at least gauging what other interest was out there. Also, refusing to trade Tyreke and then refusing to give him a call in the offseason just because we were able to retain MarShon “No Longer in the NBA after Appearing in a Measly Thirty-Six Games for the Franchise” Brooks for cheap was criminal. These are things the front office decided to do, and Wallace is the head of that office.

Believe whatever you want, but Wallace as the face of this regime has a preposterously bad draft history, a largely bad track record with FA acquisitions, has routinely been on the losing end of trades, and he’s botched multiple coaching hires now, with Lionel Hollins being his only real success. He was not the primary force responsible for hiring Dave Joerger, possibly the most competent coach in franchise history, but Wallace was the acting GM when the FO let Joerger walk, which in hindsight should’ve been a fireable offense in and of itself.

It’s easy to blame Wallace because he’s the face of the front office. I wish we lived in a world where no one has to shoulder the blame for the terrible product to which we fans have been subjected almost nightly for two seasons now, but that simply is not the case. Someone has to be held accountable

darealrobertmcd•

I don't blame Chris Wallace for the Chandler Parsons signing, Mike Conley was more than likely going to sign with Dallas if we didn't do it. I would take making one last run with Parsons/Conley/Gasol over a rebuild any day. The only screw up I blame Chris Wallace for is Thabeet back in 2009. The fact of the matter is, Chris Wallace made the 2010-2017 run we went on. He brought in Z-Bo when he was at a low point in his career, he made an incredible signing of Tony Allen which the city loves for ever. We say the Grizzlies are shit at developing but we did develop Mike Conley and Marc Gasol to be a dominate threat for over a decade. That said, it is time for a new era of Grizzlies basketball and I don't think Chris Wallace should be apart of it. Sometimes relationships just grow very stale and fanbases want a new era. Just look how the Green Bay Packers treated Mike McCarthy. A coach that has been with them for over a decade and they won a Super Bowl together but the fanbase was tired of him despite how much success they had with him.

0
RexLegoOP•

Totally agree. Thank you for giving a reasonable answer without being disrespectful like the majority of the people on here.

Do I want Wallace fired? No. Should he? No. Would I be upset if he did? Probably not. I'm not denying change, I'm just saying that people are literally sending death threats to a guy who doesn't deserve it. And he's getting all this heat because people can't read between the lines and look into the deeper meaning behind stuff.

Also, side note. Thabeet being drafted was more Heisley's fault than Wallace. Wallace actually wanted to pick Steph Curry, but Heisley wanted Thabeet.

1
darealrobertmcd•

I actually did hear something about Thabeet was Heisley's guy now that I think about it. I think a lot of Grizzlies fans (well not just Grizzlies fan, fans of any team) just want someone to point the finger at when things go wrong and more often than not, it's the GM. Chris Wallace has put us in the position to win for the past decade. This season we started off strong (first place a month into the season) and things just went down hill. I actually put a lot of blame on Gasol and J.B for continuing to play Mack. Gasol will pick and choose what games he wants to give max effort for and we need him to be giving max effort every night if we want a chance. Fiz got so tired of it he just straight up sat him. Which cost him his job but still.
