Confusing results

I got my results recently and the two major percentages are 29 french (which makes sense since I'm french Canadian) and 26% English or Irish. That last part doesn't make sense since my grandfather on my father's side is from Hungary and so are his parents, the test suggest that my English ancestry is from a grandparent there's zero indication that any of my grandparents are British. I'm doubting the results a little right now... I have proof that I'm 25% Hungarian.

Full Hungarians also get a mix of everything, 23andme is not good at separating out Hungarian ancestry (or rather, it’s hard to do). Most of the results I’ve seen are 1/3 Balkan, 1/3 Eastern Europe, 1/3 French/German.

Well what's the other half of your composition? Eastern European?

As for the British & Irish, parts of my family are French-Canadian as well and we all got a significant percentage of it. It's just built up over time due to the history of the British in Canada. No French-Canadian is purely French, to put it another way. There's bound to be British in there.

The other highest composition I have is Eastern European 8.1%

Edit: it makes sense that there's British in there but the lack of Hungarian DNA raises alot of questions.

Then there you go. Hungary is considered Eastern European.

But it should be 25%

Not necessarily. If anything, it points to your grandfather not being 100% Eastern European, genetics-wise. Keep in mind Hungary is close to Austria, and Austria is filed under French & German. There's also the possibility his family moved to Hungary from other parts of Europe over the past couple centuries.

Please see my post below.

Ancestry on paper doesn’t match up perfectly with DNA ethnicity estimates.

These regions overlap and you don’t inherit the same amount of DNA from each grandparent.

I will just say that my grandfather is 88% French-Canadian and 12% Irish-Canadian on paper.

On 23andme, he’s only like 31% French and a whopping 41% British/Irish.

I believe it has to do with the history between France and Britain (Norman Conquest) and their close proximity.

I can’t speak for the missing Hungarian, but I can speak for the high percentage of British ethnicity for French-Canadians.

On Ancestry DNA, he’s like 84% French and 16% British/Irish which is almost perfect.

And that completely makes sense it's just the lack of my Hungarian DNA makes me question the results since I have proof that I have minimum 2 generations of Hungarian decent.

Dont’t worry. my hungarian results came just after the recent update. Before that, i was only polish 😂 in EE. Hungarians are very mixed. So I’m german, czech, polish, italian, BI.

I'm not sure that the most recent update is good at separating mixed east and west European results now. I did my test like 6 years ago, and in all previous updates I had 20-24% eastern European (which fit with my family tree), and with this most recent update it dropped me down to 3.9% Eastern European and pushed it all to Fench & German.
