Is there a way to root your phone without wiping it?

General Discussion

Title.

I want to root my 6T, but I don't want to wipe all the data from it, especially since I've been using it since release. Anybody got any tips, or do I just have to bite the bullet and wipe it?

Rooting doesn't wipe your phone, but the first step is unlocking the bootloader which does wipe your phone. But you only need to do that once and you're good

Well at least it's only once. What about the network? Will I lose connection to it? Should I remove the Sim first before unlocking the bootloader?

Nope, shouldn't affect anything about the sim or network, but if you want to take the sim out you can, won't help but won't hurt either

Cool, thanks!

Why do you want to do it? Not judging, just interested because I'm considering doing it too...

I want to do it simply because of bloatware like those Google apps that I don't need.

You don't have to wipe your phone to root. You just need to unlock the bootloader, install a compatible custom recovery and flash an su/root package (e.g. Magisk). I (re)root my 5T everytime I update it. The only thing I wipe is davlik cache.

AFAIK, you can't unlock the bootloader without wiping though.

However unlocking the bootloader will wipe the phone. It's a security measure.
