Make Home semi-Homeless with an empty custom home

Tips & Tricks

I do stuff on the desktop inside Dash often, and during those times I really don't need a full Home. Homeless is pretty useful, but a slight hassle switching back and forth. Now that we can create custom homes, you can use an (almost) empty glb as a Home template and make a Home that's basically just a cloud background:

It's the same cloud background that Medium uses, I think? Anyway, it's obviously not as light as going Hoemless, but works well in a pinch when I don't want all the Home stuff going on while I Dash.

Here's the empty glb I used if you want to give it a go, too:

Also let's you easily pull up an actual home when you want it. Nice!

How do you go about using it?

Download the glb file and put it in:

C:\Users<You>\Documents\Oculus Home_Import_CustomHomes

Then, open your Home menu (left menu button) and look for the "empty" glb under Places > Templates. Select it and upload it. It should upload very quickly since it's so small. Then you can click "Create Home" with it, and it'll use it to create an empty room.

Apparently some people don't have the Places > Templates option yet. It looks like we don't get the new feature all at the same time. So you might have to wait a bit if you don't have it yet.

Also, you MAY need to restart Home to see any new template in your _Import directory. Not too sure about that, but when I was messing around with it, I did have to restart Home whenever I added a new template.

Thanks, I will give it a whirl.

What's a glb ¿?

How much memory does it use ?

How long does it take to load when you close a game ?

How long does it take to close when you launch a game ?

I really love Oculus-Homeless, and it only takes 1min to reinstall after each update

glb is the format Home uses for imported objects.

It uses about 1gig of memory :( , but that's better than the original default room with no objects, which is over 2 gig for me plus lighting, animations, etc.

It's just Home, so whatever experience you have with Home, it's the same, just ...empty.

Homeless is definitely useful for someone who doesn't care about Home at all, but I like both Home and Homeless, but sometimes I just want a quick empty environment to do stuff in, and this is a nice workaround for me.
