What I noticed is that if you grow up relatively lower class, but everyone around you is also relatively lower class it seems totally normal. So I never considered myself as poor when I grew up even though I fell into the statistics of lower class (single mother, government aid etc) Only later learned how other kids grew up in like houses with 2 parents who earned enough to pay off their own property I realized where I stood in the social hierarchy.

So basically what I am trying to say is that we relativize our standing in society by what we know. So if all you know are other poor people you think being poor is normal, if all you know is other rich people you think your richness is normal. This probably plays into not realizing your own privilege

As a β€œpoor” person who was really just middle class in the suburbs, this is on the nose. Always felt alienated by the way other families spent money even though I had it better than most of the country.

yeah it's not like I was doing poorly but my mother was incredibly good with money also living in germany helps as our social system is not total shit like in the US.

But I later in life got to know people who actually were from wealthy backgrounds. Like for example when I heard a few years ago that teenagers would get shit like iphones for birthday (which cost like 500+ bucks) that blew my mind. I would never have gotten such an expensive present not even as a combination for all my presents in a year. which kinda pissed me off when I learned there were some entitled little shits who got a 500dollar phone for birthday or a car or some shit and then complained about it not being the right brand while I was sitting here wishing I could afford anything that expensive in the first place.

Anyways that was more like a ramble sorry

Sometimes I feel bad about this kinda stuff. I grew up and am growing up in a working class family, but we've still always been wealthy. I still emphasize with those much less fortunate than I am, but I often question my legitimacy

One doesn't gain "legitimacy" from the accident of one's birth but from one's response to witnessing the inequality.

Homophobia was when a group of guys I grew up with took me behind a Dairy Queen and knocked off a chunk of my gumline with their shoes.

Xenophobia is when a nation is so convinced of its group identity that it rounds up migrants and places them inside of military camps to control their spread, like they're an invasive species rather than humans.

Transphobia is when 60% of trans Americans have experienced assault or harassment inside of a public washroom but the public discourse remains whether they're the threat.

Wealthphobia is when someone owns and exploits the labour of strangers and some of those strangers are upset by that.

I can see why you'd make this comparison. It's totally appropriate and not disgusting at all.
