Jutland - AP?
I'm using the Jutland for ranked. I keep getting shot at by Jutlands and other dd's using AP. Should I be doing this?
I've got IFHE spec and have been using exclusively HE.

AP does more damage to broadside destroyers, but if they angle you'll lose damage either firing a 0 damage AP salvo or forcing a reload.
It's worth using, but HE is the safest option.
eta: Jutland AP isn't that different from other DD AP, it can just hit at steeper angles without bouncing (and it's small enough to arm on 19 mm, unlike 127 mm guns that need a bit of an angle). Kitakaze actually gains much more damage than Jutland from shooting AP.
Thanks!
AP shells have better alpha than their HE counterparts, so most of the time it's worthwhile to use AP on targets you can penetrate (broadside DDs, upper belt and superstructure of broadside heavier ships).
I generally use AP on target that's broadside and unlikely to change that anytime soon (grounded, stationary or has to angle against bigger threat), but against a maneuvering or angled target you're better off with HE for consistent (if lower) damage. Also, HE eventually saturates the superstructure resulting in no damage, with AP you can count on overpens, as they ignore saturation.
As for T9 DDs:
Jutland - the alpha difference is fairly minor ("mere" 20%), but you get better bounce angles meaning more consistency
Kitakaze - the 100mm HE is fairly pathetic, the AP.. isn't, the difference is something to the tune of 50%. Be warned that the shells lose penetration ability rapidly, beyond 10 or so km lies HE only territory.
Z-46 - crap HE, monster AP, literally double the DPM (AP reaches almost Kitakaze levels - 270k vs 272k stock). Anything showing broadside gets eaten alive. The problem is - again, your pen isn't anything special.
Fletcher and derivatives: Eh. DPM-wise similar situation to Jutland, but crappier arcs, penetration and don't get the better bounce angles. Still not to be underestimated.
VMF DDs: Iz gud, komrad.. not to Kitakaze/Z-46 level, but better than the rest of the pack (Jutland only gets a break thanks to its RoF and angles) and retains the penetration better than any other DD.
Yugumo (or really any IJN DD with 127s) - now there's a ship you shouldn't use AP on. Very spicy HE means little incentive for AP use unless you can get citadels, and THAT means close quarters with Neptune/Seattle/etc.
Thanks very much mate. I'll give it a go, hopefully it'll improve my chances!
Use AP on broadside DDs. Yes, you may break more modules with HE shells, but look at the numbers: AP shell hits 2100, while HE shell hits 1700. It might not look much of a difference at a glance, but if you look at DPM the difference becomes magnified: 174828 for HE, and 215964 (calculations are done based on Jutland's base DPM, does not include BFT and/or Main Battery Mod 3). Jutland's strength lies in its DPM to quickly finish off other targets, especially DDs, so using AP shells against broadside enemy DD further maximizes your advantage. Also, against a broadside DD, I don't think the AP ever over penetrates, it's usually full penetrations.
Keep in mind your numbers are for citadel damage which is impossible on DDs and AP can bounce so it’s not 100% reliable. It’s good for a salvo or two when you know they will be broadside or barely angled but don’t rely on it all the time.
Jutland and Daring get "babytaur" AP, with the same filthy results due to the improved penetration angles. Absolutely use that AP whenever you see broadsides.
Minitaur would have been funnier.
If u have ifhe then u dont need to shoot ap. Use it on broadside targets even dds. If u dont have ifhe ur he cant pen most dds u will meet so u have to use ap mostly
In my opinion using HE is superior to AP on Jutland when fighting DDs. The alpha damage difference is not as significant. If from one AP volley, only one scores on overpen instead of a pen you would've done better with HE and it gets only worse when you start getting bounces. That plus the fact that HE also sets fires and breaks modules, thus forcing DCP from the target makes it far superior.
Only use AP on broadside BBs and cruisers since your HE can only pen the superstructure.

566.7 * 6 = 3,400
700 * 5 = 3,500 + 210 = 3,710
So not only can you overpen one you can outright miss that shot and still be ahead in raw DPM.
Didn't do the math, already expected someone is gonna correct me. What's important is the frequency of overpens and bounces to decide whether AP is better than HE and both happen still quite often even with improved bounce angles.
After finally doing some math myself, the frequency of overpens needs to be around 27% for the AP dpm to be equal to the HE dpm.
Jutland and daring's AP arms with 19mm armor minimum, so there is 0 chance for overpens against enemy DDs
Yes there is, most DD superstructures have less than 19mm armor.
T8+ DDs all have 19mm superstructure armor, check it yourself.
Jutland gets enhanced AP pen angles, somewhere between the RN CL and USN CA angles. This means Jutland AP pens instead of bounces at much steeper angles than other DDs. At any kind of broadside ish angle, and even nearly bow on you can still get pens reliably. You should absolutely use your AP when the angle is flat at all because it will boost your damage considerably, even if you have IFHE.
Don't forget to use it on cruisers and Battleships as well. Unless you are trying to start a fire after a confirmed damage con, the AP can reliably land 2k volleys on the broadside. They really really add up quickly.
Thanks for the feedback mate!
