Soldier Training, Porcupine Chapter
The second best tab to invest in.
Unfortunately it is on the same day as Fliers. What a dilemma.
They're also extremely boring.
They take hits, they dish it back, then they sit around waiting for enemies to come to them.
Unless they're lead by Elwin, then they become blood thirsty hounds out for the sweet and succulent taste of horseflesh.
Lancer Skills
+30% ATK/DEF vs Cavalry
+30% Damage when counterattacking (Updated later to +20% ATK when counter attacking)
-20% Damage Taken when HP below 50%(Updated to HP below 70%)
Before the update, Lancers' attack is so low they won't be able to do much damage even on counterattack, despite the skill. If you see your tank completely destroy people on counterattack, it's not their troops. It's Vargas hitting like a tank, or Ledin hitting them like a tank with two main cannons.
But their damage reduction below a certain health threshold is amazing, and synergizes well with their role and their personal skills.
Phalanx
48 HP, 37 ATK, 26 DEF, 16 MDEF, -30% Physical Damage Taken
THE lancer troop. Takes hits, has no gimmicks.
Hard as a rock, never die to physical damage, usable by most non-empire lance units, shatters to a million pieces when a mage coughs. But they are the best tank soldiers in the game simply for no other reason than physical damage dealers being the ones you want to cover the most against anyways.
Heavy Centurion
48 HP, 37 ATK, 23 DEF, 17 MDEF, +30% ATK/DEF when attacked
The biggest trap in the game.
Everyone who takes these guys can take Phalanxes. Except Pierre, but he got lobsters.
But these things are colored book units so they MUST be better, right?
No, they suck. +30% Defense is useless late game compared to -30% damage, and +30% attack on lancers mean they go from 1 damage to doing about 10 damage, horray.(Disclaimer: Hyperbole)
Phalanx is superior to them in EVERY WAY. Not even a case of Highland Warrior vs Bucket Head Zombie here.
The only feasible advantage they have is they can be unlocked before you have access to other T3 units. But even then, why are you unlocking these guys instead of Amazons or Titans?
Just save your books on other units.
Amazon Champions
40 HP, 43 ATK, 22 DEF, 20 MDEF, When initiating combat, +30% ATK, 75% chance to reduce enemy defense by 20%
Unlike the chauvinistic male pigs of the patriarchy who are content to laze around and let others whip them while calling them names, these strong independent women are out for BLOOD.
They are the only offensive type Lancer troops, and they are accessible by Ledin whose biggest weakness is only getting Phalanx at level 50. They are also available for Chris who is on the offensive most of the time. These are definitely worth an early unlock for these reasons.
As a unit themselves, they are one of the only two types of units to cause Defense Down(The other is Demon Hunter, and honestly, they suck), and they are comparable to the top infantry attackers when they aren't beating down low HP targets. So even if their tech tree is mostly useless to them, they can still compete with the first stringers from the Infantry tree on the attack.
Lava Titan
53 HP, 34 ATK, 26 DEF, 19 MDEF, At end of turn, debuff a random enemy within 2 blocks with "Burn", causing 30% Max HP fixed damage when their turn ends.
Their skill stacks.
This means you have Vargas and Lana stand next to someone. Then Bernhardt hits them with a stun. Next turn, they lose 90% of their max health. Oh wait, what's this! Anna is here too! Never mind that guy just died.
Yes, these guys are that ridiculous.
Plus, even though they have no defensive skills, their massive amounts of HP and DEF makes them still able to survive somewhat well.
#1 choice for colored book unit for empire players, for obvious reasons.
Stone Colossus
48 HP, 34 ATK, 28 DEF, 16 MDEF, When soldier HP is below 70%, all damage taken -30%
Below 70% health, these guys are impossible to get rid of.
Above 70% health, these guys are wiped out by pretty much any mage using any spell.
Although on paper they look much harder than Phalanx, they are strictly worse in practice.
Still, if you don't have Phalanx, these guys are your best be-Oh wait, nevermind, you can take Lava Titans on those guys.
Dark Centurion
48 HP, 40 ATK, 26 DEF, 16 MDEF, When attacked at soldier HP greater than 10%, activate Barb at end of battle.
If Freya could use these guys, they'd be ok. Freya would be ok too, actually.
But no, these guys would rather associate themselves with Keith.
Let me ask you this: Have you ever seen Keith being useful, ever?
Exactly.
Vanguard Lancer
43 HP, 40 ATK, 23 DEF, 17 MDEF, When HP is lower than 70%, ATK +45%
A blue Zaku. When has blue Zaku ever been good in this game?
Well, if you can somehow control their awkward HP requirement, these guys can go murder things pretty good with offensive lancers like Altemuller and Elwin, but it's a really awkward requirement to satisfy - You overheal and it's gone, you underheal and you don't have enough units to actually attack with.
But really, they're blue Zaku.
So there you have it - Infantry is really good because there's a good unit for each good hero. Lancer tree is really good because there's a unit for every useful role. So how does Fliers take the cake? Stay tuned, and find out, next time on Mobile Guardian Blue Zaku White Angel.
TL;DR
Green Zaku > Blue Zaku, males are still all masopigs to their female queens, Keith is so trash he made an entire type of soldiers trash, and Anna's Big Texas Red Rock BBQ Steakhouse is opening for business.
