Stunned

Still trying to digest today's announcement. While I wasn't in a quitting mood over the last few weeks, the reality is the game has been... boring now for a few months. WB hasn't been cracking down on metas, nor do they even apparently understand why metas are a bad thing. There have been no new game types for a while, and while toons like Zod were needed, they weren't exactly interesting and WB hasn't really been introducing interesting toons lately.

People have reacted in different ways. Some just called for features like a shard shop (hinted at in October for November!) and graphical improvements. I... these wouldn't have fixed the problems, but I understand why people asked for them. Others asked for new game types. And sometimes we made somewhat cynical jokes that WB's response would be G12, Lvl 90, and L6.

And, wrapped up in a pretty bow, that is what we've been given. In "Rebirth" we've been given G12, or L6, given a new name but essentially the same concept, something literally nobody was asking for. And we've been given it combined with a really awful version of the graphical improvements some asked for. Oooh, if we farm enough shards and some unobtainium we'll be able to... change our toons appearance back from Legendary to regular. Well gosh diddly, what a compelling feature.

Rebirth is either the most massive display of out of touch incompetence ever seen in computer game history... or it's a giant middle finger at WB's customers.

Part of me thinks it really might be the latter. Not by the higher ups perhaps, but by a core within WB who really would rather work on something else but currently have to maintain a game that isn't unpopular enough to cancel. Maybe they just don't like working on it. Maybe they want to work on Injustice 2 or something. I don't know. I don't understand it.

But either way it's deflating. It tells me that there's nothing coming down the pipe to solve the real problems with the game. There will be no new game types to try, no replacement for "Alliance Missions" where one day you're trying to figure out whether you should score points for your team or stand a chance of making progress in PVP, and the next you're playing 30-40 games on autoplay. Nothing even to make PVP fun - indeed, Rebirth will make PVP pointless to anyone who uses it given anyone who uses Rebirth will only ever get slates of +6s to attack.

For the first time since this time in 2017, when I started playing the game, I don't have any confidence in it getting better.

What I'd like is to see WB cancel Rebirth, and have a serious conversation with us about what we want out of the game. What will keep us coming back. I don't think they'll do that, but honestly unless we see changes soon, why would anyone continue playing?

They already know what we want, no need for a conversation between us and the devs. If they just peeked at any of the forums in these past two years they'd know what we want. They probably do know and just don't give a shit. They're just trying to get as much money out of the game as they can before no one is left.

I agree with you, absolutely. Nice you've given shout outs to graphical improvement suggestions, often completely forgotten in discussions regarding this game's present and future.

I don't mind late-game content and features, but this is one step too far. With the current amount of energy and resources we are able to get, that's one hell of a slap in the face. And it'll only contribute to the already existing desparity between whales and normal players. Now, with Rebirth stat boosts, PvP lists will be even more unbeatable - that's a norm to me, someone who never went G11, yet I constantly encounter them, but now even G11 players may struggle if they don't push for R ranks/upgrades.

Locking skin toggle feels, really, like an insult - it's arguably the very most requested feature. Something basic, something essential, considering how awful some of characters look on L ranks (MJ being my main object of disgust), and yet it may as well be locked behind the most massive walls yet - L80 and L5. What a dick move, WB.

Totally agree with everything you said, I want to continue playing this game but announcements like this make you feel like quitting, I will wait to see the full content announcement for March and then I will make a decision on quitting or staying with this game.

I agree with pretty much everything you wrote.

I don't see any way they can Rebirth. They think it is a great idea and would look possibly even worse if they cancel it after just releasing new about it.

What gets me is from the podcasts I got the impression that Hatemael & Kage were communicating with them. Wouldn't you think they would have ran it by them to get their reactions to it?

Of course I don't think we can get an answer from them since if they are given any "inside information" about the game they have to have signed a NDA so we will never know.

I have always thought G11 was a disaster in the way they released it. This? Looks even worse. Devs keep releasing these extra layers of power without actually releasing a good way of getting our chars to them. Now we will need even more green essence to get chars to level 80, but there is still no way of getting that extra essence/xp ,mats for 70g11 chars.

This is most probably going to be the end for me.

I have mixed feelings about Rebirth. Other folks have pointed out that in a game about leveling up characters, increasing the ceiling makes logical sense. I think the heartache is coming from the general desire to see new features, not more of the same. Personally, I would never complain about new, fun game modes but I haven't seen anything suggesting we should expect something like that in the near future.

That said, I do expect WB to reevaluate the current mechanism to get from a brand new character to a level 70, g11 toon. When updates like Rebirth are made to other games, the time to get to the "previously established maximum" is commonly reduced either via more material drops, lowered cost to level up, special events, etc. It doesn't always happen, but it keeps the game fresh(er) and the player base generally more content with their progression to the new maximum thresholds.

I’d definitely like to see something like that. As somebody who’s returned after a long time of other games it can be a real hard grind to try and get any characters to a decent level/gear!

I have a friend who’s just started and they’re struggling to get going as well. Takes forever to get an L1 as a newbie!

I've taken two breaks before because the game felt stale, so I'm right there with you. The first couple of months are brutal and it feels like you can hardly play the game, but it gets better. Slowly.

Forever is an exaggeration, getting legendary toons is easier than ever.

That's the thing, there is no incentive to gear up, and gearing up hinders more than helping, and it's super boring to do and costly.

They didnt re-evaluate the cost of the previous level increase from 70 - 80.

What gives you confidence they are doing so now?

StumptasticLegendary Green Arrow: The Emerald Archer•

That's a very valid observation. I don't have that confidence, but I'd like to hope this time will be different.

Other folks have pointed out that in a game about leveling up characters, increasing the ceiling makes logical sense.

Other people are idiots then... that might make sense in an MMO where you only have a single player character... but this isn't an MMO... this is a game with an EVER EXPANDING roster of playable characters. It's completely illogical to EVER raise the level cap. It's the stupidest thing I can imagine for such a game.

totalzEtrigan: The Demon•

What can I say? Did WB fire most of the devs? If not, maybe they should fire the idiots that proposed rebirth~ that's just lazy and stupid, and essentially pissing players off!!

1
Tewtytron•

Well it hasnt been released yet, so I am hoping that WB sees all these posts and alters it a little. Maybe getting rid of the lvl 80 cap on it, or just offering the skin change w/o having to rebirth someone. And who knows, maybe this is just the first installment of a number of new content features they are getting ready to add to the game.

They havent given any in depth details yet either. This could be like when we get silhouettes, then they reveal the characters (w/o details), then a few days later they give us actual details. this could be very similar to the way they like to release information. So my thoughts are, yeah this isnt the best, but lets see how they implement it, and more importantly, lets see if there is any follow up.

UltimateD123•

Why would you want Rebirth canceled? It makes zero sense to me that adding the ability to further level your characters, in a game that’s pretty much solely about leveling your characters, is causing all these panty-bunchings.

Have you ever seen an MMO or any game thats "solely about leveling up characters" that keeps increasing the level cap WITHOUT the new content that is required to go with it ?

See it this way Chapter 8 is the chapter they designed when lvl cap was 60 and G10, we got an increase in cap at 70 and G11 WITHOUT new ways to farm the expontentially increasing materials you need , and now we get another cap increase and we still all we have to farm is the same godamn chapter 8 and some outdated material events

psolvaOPSiren•

The flaw in this argument is the notion that anyone is playing this game because of its leveling features. The overwhelming consensus here is don't go above 70 or G10.5, and that L4 is normally fine.

Most of us see this game as about building slates and seeing how we can build interesting combinations of opposing toons.

Plus, if WB wanted this game to be about leveling, they wouldn't punish you for it in PVP.

HatemaelWROL Broadcast•

This one hundred times!

Aside from the skin swap, (legit gripe there) people should be happy. Now we can choose to not upgrade rooms via rebirth and get those delicious +20s again!

2
UltimateD123•

I geared my dozen or so mains to 60 gear 10, then 70 gear 11. I’m presently level 78 with my main lead Supes. Just because someone figured out how to cheese leaderboards with underdeveloped toons and a bunch of redditors followed suit, doesn’t mean the rest of us don’t like maxing our characters.

2
DeadInHell•

Then you must not have read this post. Setting aside the numerous other issues people have with this announcement, probably the most egregious "fuck you" is the fact that they have hidden the game's most requested feature - the simple costume change - behind a paywall and tedious grind that simply is not justified.

Restricting Rebirth is reasonable, even if Rebirth itself is a bad idea. Placing costume swap behind Rebirth is indefensibly absurd.

2
UltimateD123•

Not sure why you feel that way. What’s the paywall? I’m looking forward to it. Been wanting the costume swap for awhile, (Superman first and foremost, Harley, etc). Now we have something to do with all of the extra shards. I have hundreds and hundreds of extras. I’m excited for it to roll out.

nedsplay•

Ya, good luck in upgrading all those toons to L80/L5! I'm playing this game from start every day as f2p and I could get on or two right now to this level ... and then? it's just ridiciulous, only more grind without the means to get mats and stuff properly.

1
chuggins9710•

The paywall is that most people don't have a load of shards sitting around to get a lot of toons past L5. Then the amount of mats it takes to get a character to just lvl 70 is ridiculous! Half of the player base don't even have a Lvl 80 g11 toon and those that do instantly regret it because it actually hurts them in pvp. This rebirth thing is such a screw you to people already playing. They could have added some new chapters, new ways to obtain mats, not hidden costume swaps behind the ridiculous rebirth mechanic, revamped the pvp scoring system or anything but do the thing people have been complaining about.

1
seriouslees•

What’s the paywall?

You have 20+ characters at level 80??? And you did that completely Free to Play??? Or are you being disingenuous, and you can clearly see where the paywall is?

seriouslees•

The game releases two entirely new characters every month. The game is about building a roster, not levelling characters. This isn't some sort of single player character MMO. It's completely INSANE to increase the level cap while still releasing new characters every month.
