HP Omen short-circuit after headset is connected to USB port and won’t power up anymore
I connected a Bluetooth headset to a USB port at the front of my case and the computer immediately shutdown and will not boot up anymore. Nothing happens when I push the power button. The green light at the back of the computer is lit so I am assuming the PSU is fine and there is power. I had connected the headset before with the same cable without any issue.
I am assuming there was a short-circuit when I plugged in the USB device but not sure what next steps I should take to troubleshoot. I tried disconnecting the front USB ports from the motherboard which did not change anything. I read online I might try to reset the CMOS but have never done that before.
The PC is an HP Omen that is about 18 months old and out of warranty. I fail to understand how a USB device can short-circuit a motherboard or any component of the PC though...
Anyways, any opinion / advice would be much appreciated from you guys! I am planning to bring the PC for repair to a local shop during the week if needed but would love to be able to do some basic troubleshooting myself.

Head set might have had a problem, causing this to happen. Just so I know the laws, what country do you live in?
This is in the US (NJ). The computer was bought from Best Buy. I wouldn’t be surprised that the headset would have an issue as it’s a pretty cheap one but still, shouldn’t the computer be able to protect itself? I mean, worst case, I would expect the USB port to get destroyed.
Well the US laws suck for this problem, must PCs don’t have a protection against this, take a look at USB killer. But for your problem try looking at the mother board and try identify any burst traces or chips
I’ll take a look, thanks for the info!
