Don't take your sick days the second .17 releases.

Tip

Your gonna wanna wait till your must have mods get updated. It shouldn't be more then a few days. That will give you time organize things at work so it won't be a disaster when you get back and plus the extra effort you can put in on forging a doctors note will be worth it.

Just so it's clear, dominos actually integrates with IFTTT so automating pizza delivery is absolutely something you should do

Even vanilla - you'll want to wait for people to update blueprints to share - unless you want to do everything from scratch.

-5

Uh, I'm going to delete my blueprints and start fresh, from scratch. Design your own.

Good advice.

A few days? More like a few -weeks- for the less popular mods.

I see u/Klonan has already updated one of his Mods on the Mod Portal to be 0.17 compatible. :)

LetsnotbeangryMy base is for flamer fuel.•

A jump start on the game. You get some bots to build blueprints, and you are way out in the very big ore patches. If you wanted to build a big base, that would be a great start.

2
subjectwonder8•

Perhaps it didn't fail, perhaps this is proof 0.17 version of time control will have reverse time travel.

you can download factorio as a zip file from the factoio website using your factorio account.

this is awesome!

shame i dont have a laptop though. so i could factorio at work!

Unless there's some trickery I don't know about, you should be able to just copy the factorio folder out of your steamapps folder and play

1
goldsrcmasterrace•

The Steam version isn't DRM free, at least for the Linux build. They provide the DRM free version on their site if you link your Steam account, but you won't be able to launch the Steam version without Steam.

4
JonasJurczok•

Steam has a Linux and a Mac version... That should fix the problem :)

2
zooimeuk•

How many of you are refreshing factorio.com every 5 mins? (like me)

27
Teridus•

I cant decide between "these are rookie numbers, you have to pump them up"-meme and "why dont you automate it" .

If you couldy just pretend that I posted both, that would be nice.

51
boundbylife•

In proper Factorio fashion, why not combine them. Automate refreshing every second is okay, but you're bottlenecking on RAM write speed, so add 10 computers. Now add a second internet connection. Now you can another 10 computers, but your controller server has maxed out your number of connections.

Come talk when you break 1k refreshes per second.

16
Teridus•

A great plan. With only one fault: If we - effectivly - ddos Wube we might crash their servers and therefor delay the patch ( or at least the release announcement) even further.

2
boundbylife•

No plan survives contact with the enemy, and no automation survives the real world

2
zooimeuk•

hahaha, yes that would be a good idea.

Altough doing both could lead to whole other problems of the DoS kind

14
subjectwonder8•

You posted? That is rookie reddit, you have to pump them botpost by automating it.

6
pingveno•

"These are rookie numbers, why don't you automate it?"

1
flnhst•

I just started following @factoriogame on Twitter, and enabled all notifications for that account. According to a developer post, we should get automated notifications via Twitter.

7
pm_me_ur_big_balls•

Does the Twitter app allow you to adjust notifications for only specific accounts you want to follow?

1
flnhst•

Yes, when i clicked follow, it showed a bell button where you can configure that.

2
Amadox•

are we expecting it to hit that soon? when I read "next week" I assumed it'd hit around the usual FFF time, friday...

6
zooimeuk•

Doubtful, if they launch on friday they have a lot of work for the weekend with bugfixes etc. I think a tuesday launch is likely, altough I really hope it's launched today

5
pm_me_ur_big_balls•

yeah, I suspect it will be tomorrow morning, or maybe the next morning.

1

5
orangenoise15•

Vanilla>mods

12
SysfinOP•

I sorta agree except I got used to some of the QOL mods (squeak through in particular when setting up solar or oil refining is really nice)

3
orangenoise15•

Yea I did too, but I found it made me lazy in planning stuff for some reason.

3
SysfinOP•

Upgrade planner sometimes feels like straight up cheating. Just poof better belts, better inserters, better assemblers. I wouldn't feel so dirty if a logistic/construction bot at least did the work.

1
Gloin1313•

Luckily that’s what we’re getting in 0.17!

6
Trenchft•

Make yourself hold shift when you upgrade. Then you won't feel so cheaty. (It makes bots upgrade stuff. Also closes down whatever you upgraded until it is upgraded...)

4
orangenoise15•

I agree

1
monkeyWifeFight•

The bigger mods like bobs and angels often don't get updated for weeks or months

10
Amadox•

uh.. pretty sure I read the two you mentioned have special privileges and have already been working on updates..

10
monkeyWifeFight•

That's certainly true, I'm just extrapolating from historical updates where B&A have taken a while to fully update their library of mods after a mainline update.

I could be (and hopefully am) wrong.

9
SysfinOP•

Those mods are pretty big. I expect even with special privileges it might take some time.

3
geekycoob•

As someone who plays mostly Bob's, I wonder what changes they'll have to work around and what changes they will implement in their mods. :)

1
SysfinOP•

Thats a good question. I haven't tried bobs/angels yet, I was gonna do a SpaceX run before diving into bobs. I don't think that mod should be to hard to update since it is just some late game extra items.

1
cynric42•

So they will be ready before I take my first break in my .17 game, great!

3
CardinalHaias:lab: Rocket in Progress•

I was really down when I was ill last week because I somehow thought 0.17 would come out.

So, I was really ill (but able to play) and 0.17 wasn't out and I didn't want to play factorio before.

But today I learned that 0.17 will probably not break savegames and I look forward to update my factory now. :-) Hopefully without illness, though.

6
Amadox•

I mean it's not gonna break save games in the sense that they will still work ofc, but I would still highly recommend starting a new one given that there's gonna be new world generation and many of the recipes will change, causing you to rebuild half your factory then anway.

11
CardinalHaias:lab: Rocket in Progress•

Yeah, my friend and I are currently discussing wether we want to start anew or try and fix our factory. Both challenges have their merits.

3
halberdierbowman•

You can blueprint your current base and save those blueprints in the library for you to use in your new base, if that's something you want to consider. That'll help you rebuild it faster in the new version if you want to.

3
raveturned•

Having tried this with previous updates, can confirm that "your saved game still loads" is not the same as "everything in your factory still functions". Debugging large setups where the rules have changed half-way through construction can be a nightmare.

3
starbuck42•

That's why I stopped updating Seablock

2
Amadox•

exactly, and well put.

1
Schnretzl•

Are any recipes beyond science changing?

1
Amadox•

there were some, I think. one of the bigger changes is that many of the rocket parts are accessible earlier now and used in the science recipes. I'd have to look through the FFFs myself to make sure though, which... well, you could do yourself. they're a very worthy read anyway!

1
Schnretzl•

I've caught the past few, I think maybe back through December? Just got the game mid-January 😁

1
inknib•

I spent all of sunday updating and compacting my science pack blueprints. Found out today they are redoing science.

Welp.

6
SysfinOP•

On the plus side new blueprints should be easier this time.

2
dewiniaid•

But what if you're the author of said mods?

5
Doomquill•

Then you update really quick and then play?

1
braddarko23•

which are you the author of?

0
dewiniaid•

Somehow I missed this message until now, but these ones

1
______-_-___•

i've really mostly played with the long reach mod

because walking around is hard

5
mishugashu•

You don't play vanilla when a patch drops? How are you supposed to re-analyze what mods you want with the new updates?

5
SysfinOP•

Good point.

1
chadklatz•

yeah it reminds me when stardew just updated. I'm was excited to play but had to wait mods or my save could be broken

3
matt-ratze•

Are things expected to break in mods or does only the version number need to be updated? That could be done locally in the mod zip folder

3
Amadox•

that will very much depend on the mod.

7
fikkityfook•

Noob question, but are vanilla game saves usually safe in these transitions? And if so aside from changes to worldgen, all changes would be in effect right?

1
Amadox•

safe as in will they still run? yea, no problem.

safe as in will everything work right away? no. due to the changed recipes, big parts of your factory will have to be ripped up and remade as both rations and materials changed.

outside the already generated places, the new worldgen would be in effect as well btw, which will make for weird transitions between old and new. if all that doesn't bother you, you can keep playing the old saves though.

I'd recommend backing up your old save folder before updating to 0.17 (that's a manual opt-in process for now, it won't happen automatically atm, so no rush), in case you decide to go back to 0.16 after all for whatever reason.

3
chris-tier•

Yes, save game migration usually works very well.

1
pm_me_ur_big_balls•

Many mods will break.

1
Ambaire•

Hm. Only must-have mod that I know of is FNEI, but it's not really that important for vanilla.

3
wampastompa09:solarpanel:•

Nah...Play it vanilla.

A lot of the QoL mods I use are becoming vanilla.

Also the Devs need our feedback on Vanilla.

3

When is it coming out?

2
vmainen•

When its ready. Best estimate currently is "before friday". There is no specific day or time yet.

EDIT: To add, it first releases as an experimental version, in which you have to opt in. Historically, experimental versions have been as stable the game usually is, so it does not hurt to opt in. If you are willing to wait until stable version, likely couple of months.

4
ciawal•

I've not played for a very (very?) long time and I'm planning on starting a multiplayer game with friends once this update hits.

Are there any mods that would be recommended to new players which we should wait for? If so does 0.17 bring anything that would be relevant to new players or should we just use the current stable version?

2
LordOfSwans•

Play vanilla. Depending on how long it's been, the game will be substantially different and worth a vanilla play.

2
