What do you think the chances are of a Doctor Who Spin-off on Britbox

DISCUSSION

So if you haven't seen the recent news, BBC and ITV recently announced they are bringing there US/Canada based streaming service to the UK (with other potential partners joining but not confirmed) and will be producing original programming for the service. I feel their could be a possibility of a Doctor Who spin-off part of this original programming, mainly Torchwood

A Torchwood revival has been up in the air for quite a while now, with John Barrowman having negotiations with the BBC and US networks, one of the major setbacks could have been how it's not been on TV since 2011, which is where streaming is a huge benefit. With a streaming audience, you will more easily take it to the right auidence without the risk of it tanking viewership wise on network TV cause the general audience won't be fully aware of Torchwood after such a long hiatus, whilst also providing the backlog of episodes for new viewers to access, catch-up and be invested in the show on Britbox.

I feel it would also be a huge benefit for Britbox to invest in "franchiseable" material to sell Britbox to people, so something like a Torchwood revival, a new Doctor Who spin-off entirely as well as stuff like a whole library and resources from CBBC and CITV to work from, it would be in the BBC's best interests to invest in something new or revived Who related to sell people, and can be done on a modest budget depending on episodes and production quality, as they won't want to break the bank straight away on it.

Describing what John Barrowman has been doing as "having negotiations" is incredibly generous

"No... uh (thinks of reason) uh..Moffat said no"

The other plus about “Britbox” is that all the classic Who will be available.

I, personally, don't see that happening - as much as I would like it to - with the Blu Ray collections, I don't think they would want to reduce thier customers by putting them all on britbox. Also, in Britain, the BBC have always been a bit iffy with classic who. It's never been available to stream as part of a subscription, and only very rarely gets broadcast.

I, personally, don't see that happening

It's already on there.

In other countries, yes, but in the UK things are different.

Streaming services can have different catalogues depending on the country. Doctor Who is actually a prime example. (I wish that pun was intended)

BBC thought a Doctor Who spin-off would help the streaming only version of BBC Three. It didn't. I don't know if BBC will think a Doctor Who spin-off would help Britbox.

Maybe if it was more rooted in the universe and actually promoted as a spin-off

The Doctor appeared in the first episode and the weeping angels were the big bad.

the weeping angels were the big bad.

Not til series 2, which didn't happen but I agree it was a proper spin off. One of the characters was in the main show

What do you mean, not until season 2. They were running the school and spying on the gang. They changed Miss Quill.

Yeah, one of the teachers was in both. A lot of people from DW were mentioned on the death board, too.

not unless you count the Doctor. I liked Class, by the way. I prefered its lone season to Series 11.

big spoiler!

No chance IMO. The only things BritBox add are cosy mysteries and family dramas.

But they are calling it a Netflix competitor, they'll want a large variety of stuff made for it to even compete

3
MegaManMoo•

Why bother posting if you don't know what you're talking about? Cosy mysteries and family dramas are a small fraction of what's on BritBox.

3
MegaManMoo•

Barrowman has never been in "negotiations" over Torchwood and he doesn't own the property.

Expect he's said at conventions he has talked with the BBC about bringing it back and posted muitiple pictures at the BBC before meetings

I wonder how many times the BBC will have to tell him that RTD has the rights and not them before it gets through his skull that he keeps going after the wrong people with the wrong deal. I know Steven Moffat had to do it a few times and actually issued a public statement at one point on the topic after Barrowman tried to gather fan support to go after him on the matter.

you can have The Jo Grant Adventures, please? (Ace, Kate Stewart and Miss Quill can turn up from time to time. and, no, I didn't suggest only woman characters on purpose.)

That would be cool. Torchwood was good in its time, even Miracle Day was a cool concept although nothing will touch Children of Earth.

It would have to be something new and different. If I hear "PaTeRnOsTeR gAnG iN LoNdOn" or "cLaRa AnD mE" again....!

cLaRa AnD mE

Ugh, please no.

To be honest, if they made it with a decent budget, good writers, and a more adult tone, I could see it working.

You want bad PR? This is how you get bad PR.

Not happening. I haven't heard anything about Britbox original content. Why would they make any when the taxpayers funding them can't even use the service?

It's in the press release so they are developing programs

I haven't heard anything about Britbox original content.

They've already made some, and are making more. The third (American) series of The Bletchley Circle is theirs.
