To my mother

Moira,

You changed your mind about us coming over (well, specifically me) for our 21st birthday, which is Friday. Even though just days before, you were happily telling me about the $10 lunch specials at Slater’s 50/50. Your doing so has changed my own plans (inviting Michael over so he can celebrate with us), so now I guess we’ll just go with Scott and Spencer to Panera or something or back to their apartment before we head back to Dad’s for the party over there.

I should have known you would pull this shit again, make up a million excuses why you’re busy, instill more guilt in me because unlike you I actually have feelings.

You never apologized for any of the shit in the past. Your false accusations that even got my counselor involved, screaming at me at 7 AM because my hair wasn’t clean enough, throwing al my stuff out on the sidewalk when I left and not even letting me use any boxes, making me feel like I was a burden to Michael, making me feel like shit because leaving you made the distance greater for us...

I have the compensation from the accident now. You have no financial power over me anymore. You’re so goddamn worried that dad will take money from me, but you wouldn’t listen if I pointed out he asks me every time, before taking out a dime. He has helped me become better financially.

I will have a future with Max. Just you wait.
