There are three reasons why "the ex isn't in the picture".

She moved cross-country to ensure the dad pretty much could never be in the picture, e.g. he's a surf instructor and she moved to Iowa - and because of child support demands (Check's due on the first, or you go to jail teehee) he doesn't have the time or resources to go find another job in Iowa - and the surf is pretty terrible on land. And she knew this, which is why she did it. So she abandoned one man in the most mercenary way, so you should be intelligent enough to know she's gonna drop you the same way too.

The guy's a psychopath, raging asshole, or in jail - he lives one street over, but the moment she walked out he turned his back on his kids. Means she's a really shitty judge of character, which means unless she's willing to have you dictate who she sees and doesn't (hint: she won't) you're going to be dealing with a cast of rogues and scum in your life.

The kids are complete shits, and she can't cope with them kicking holes in the wall so she's hoping you physically being present is going to not only be a cooling rod in a fission reactor, but also handy with drywalling and willing to pay off the Home Depot credit cards.
No circumstance there is a good thing, more red flags than a Chinese embassy.
