Should I tell my boss that I'm grieving?

So, a friend of mine passed away unexpectedly over the weekend. I found out at work on Monday, and while I was upset, it wasn't obvious I'd gotten bad news. I have my own office, so I was alone when I got the news, and I carried on with my day pretty much as normal.

As the week has gone on, I've noticed that this is definitely impacting my work -- I'm distracted, I've nearly missed deadlines, I'm not responding to emails or even following conversations in meetings.

So I'm wondering, should I tell my boss? I haven't lost a family member, and I most likely won't need to take time off work. But I feel like it might be helpful to explain what's going on with me -- or is that weird?

It’s not weird. If you feel comfortable with your boss then I encourage that open communication. Maybe they can assist you during your grieving or maybe would even allow you to take some time off. I’m definitely sorry to hear of your loss <3 it’s always tough losing someone close to you

It's bullshit that you would even have to feel that way.

Loss is loss. Doesn't matter if they are immediately family, or someone you just met and befriended a month ago.

It will effect any of us, if an emotional bond had been formed.

Of course tell your boss.

Good luck and sorry for your loss.

As a boss, I can say- please please tell them. I hope they’re the kind of boss that cares about their employees and wants to help you. But even if not, any performance dip with an explanation makes their job a lot easier!
