The M18 feels like a low-tier MBT and I love it
Holy shiznits I love this Tank Destroyer. You have mobility that surpasses nearly every tank at the battlerating it sits at. Of course, it's one of those tanks in the classification of 'I-heard-this-tank-is-good-why-am-I-shit-at-it'. Once you learn how to properly maneuver this vehicle, you can easily stand out from the hordes of M18s that zerg rush into enemy fire as some kind of blaze of glory.
The best maps to play this tank destroyer in is maps filled with forested areas and plentiful thickets. While maps like Sinai could work—you'll have a difficult time with the lack of cover you're granted. When it comes to movement and traversing the map. Your choice should be hopping from cover to cover, running along the shrubs and trees if you can before plopping down to a slow crawl through the large blobs of forest.
Think of it like this. You're the USS Hellcat and each blob of forest is like a separate star system. When you want to reach another small forest (star system) you slap on the warp drive and zoom your ass out while being wary of interceptors or those in the way of your course. Let me give a good example of a match I had on Domination on Ardennes:
I spawned on the lower side of the map—where 'A' was—and I flanked through the left side. I followed the edge of a lining of trees before I reached a small town and found a small forest in F8 and F7 on the map. The forest had the main road beside it leading to B.
This is where I became "The Butt Gremlin of the Ardennes" Enemies who passed through that main road became instant-gibbed from formidable my 76mm cannon, a few foes knew of my legend and tried to hunt me down through my humble abode. A poor Chi-Nu brazenly rushed through the forest, and while I was clearly infront of him, he didn't see me. So I mercilessly slaughtered him—at least it was an honorable death. It got to the point that the enemy team tried to actively avoid the forest I was in. That was when I turned towards the defenseless AA that were all snuggled in the enemy spawn.
At that moment I felt like Anakin Skywalker when he murderized all those young Jedi. Two Ostwinds and a BTR were all that stood in my way. I killed the first Ostwind by shoving a shell through his DnD dice turret. His friend panicked by the sudden expulsion of his best friend, and he panic fired in my general direction missing me while I responded with a M62 round through his hull instantly offing him. The BTR was distracted with a P-47 of ours the entire time and I lobbed a shot through him. Unfortunately the shell wasn't able to detonate. And while I was able to score a second hit, he finished me off with his machine guns.
I later nuked his ass with a 1000lb bomb.
All-in-all. The M18 feels like some kind of MBT. Sure it doesn't have HEAT-FS or APFSDS. But the M62 round is it's APFSDS. With only 14mm (with the current ballistics update) difference between the Tiger I's PzGr 39, higher velocity, a 3 second faster reload as well as really good APCR round. It feels like I'm playing an MBT with a likeness to a Leopard 1. Sure not everyone has had the same experience as I have with the M18, and that's okay. Because this is almost like a love letter for the Tank Destroyer that held a special place in my heart ever since it was added all those years ago.
Thank you M18 for the enjoyment, and speed on.
