Started Progosterone shots (Makena)

I am currently 17w 4d with my 2nd pregnancy and I got my first shot of Makena yesterday. I was supposed to start them at 16 weeks but I made the stupid mistake of not picking up the phone and having a full mailbox when the pharmaceutical company called.

Either way, I wanted to write a little about my experience so far because hopefully it might help someone who has to get them too, and I didn't find too much information on here so thought I'd share. On mobile, so please bear with me 😁

My first son was born at 30w 5d after my water broke a little over 24 hours before. He spent 8 weeks in the NICU and hankfully he has had no health issues due to prematurity, but nonetheless it was very stressful to see him growing outside of my body and struggling to catch up or to even coordinate breathing and swallowing.

The doctor can't tell me for sure why he was premature but I have the risk factors of being obese, several fibroids in my uterus, an excess of amniotic fluid and shortly after my son's birth we found out I had the very mild beginnings of pre-eclampsia.

Makena is supposed to help decrease the risk of premature labor again. My doctor explained to me it is not a guarantee but if we can delay from 30 weeks to 34 weeks it's already a huge improvement. Keeping a positive mindset we make it to 37 this time 😊

So after my doctor requested the shots and the insurance approved them they called me to arrange shipment. The shots arrived at my doctors office yesterday. The nurse practitioner gave me the shot. It goes on the back of your upper arm, what I call the wing because all my fat is collected there πŸ˜‚. The shot has an auto injector like a pen and she just clicked it on really fast. (Sorry, I'm not good with medical terms). She said I would be sore for 1 or 2 days after, and each week we will alternate which arm the shot goes on and after a few doses the area might start to get itchy. They did mention that it is very thick and some women complain that it is uncomfortable.

Honestly the shot itself didn't hurt at all and while I can still feel where it was administered it is in no way sore. It probably hurt more to take of that band aid that must have been manufactured with super glue because it would not. Come. Off!!

It was just my first dose so we'll see how I feel about it after having a few. Right now the only thing that kind of bothers me is having to go in to the office every week BUT it will all be worth it if little Bean does not have to go through a hospital stay, or at least a much shorter one.

Thanks for reading if you did. Good luck to all you mamas, pregnancy sure is a crazy ride under any circumstances but we will have our little loves in our arms before we know it.
