Struggling to have impact with Baptiste

Question

So I'm currently playing Baptiste in low gold and low diamond and in both ranks I'm struggling to have any real impact. I can do an adequate job of keeping teammates and myself alive however outside of immortality field I feel like a healbot and not an active contributor.

Some additional things to add:

  • While my dps accuracy is pretty bad (~25%), I spend the vast majority of time healing. My healing accuracy is about 70-80%.

  • My ults are generally for amplifying dps and used with other ults or to shut down pushes, they're not the greatest though.

  • I use my cooldowns reactively 90% of the time, especially immortality field.

  • Apart from the occasional repositioning and contesting I rarely use crouch jump.

So should I play more active/aggressive (if so, how?), should I just improve my fundamentals or am I just doing something entirely wrong? Any advice is appreciated.

Baptiste's most important ability is the field. So focus on that. You want to be more proactive and start thinking of what you achieve in terms of game objective instead of just saving someone. You can use it to cover a dive, or a big DPS ult (Reaper, Mcree, Pharah), maybe kill a Bastion, or negate Nade.

As for his ult, it feels quite close to Orisa's Bongo. Just pop it down at start of a big fight as soon as you get it. It can also force enemy to worse position.

DPS accuracy doesn't matter, total amount of damage does (and actually number of kills even more). Just keep on spamming and look for any CC for easy headshots for huge damage.

Seems like the general conclusion is to start playing more proactively and focus on immortality field usage. Thanks a lot

Yeah - it cvan be used vvery proactively. I used lamp last night to allow my team to push onto a bastion comp holding the choke on Volskaya A, for instance, actually opening the fight with it..

Yea, you might even get it off twice in a fight.

i'm by no means an expert but i've started noticing that baptise's crouch jump can be super helpful to keep urself alive, maintain LOS of ur team and provide better spot healing to scattered parts of ur team. Absolutely love it.

Agree with the notion that lamp needs to be used proactively to make plays or cover tanks who are going in. It also diverts pressure. Though if you're expecting an ult soon, probably should save it. Also fun fact, its often better to kite on the edge of lamp's effect rather than standing near the center as it prevents aoe from taking down the lamp itself. i.e. genji blading, stay on outskirts and make genji choose between u and rely on his teammates or the lamp and risk not getting kills. I think baptise dps is pretty decent but its not the most important thing. Similar to ana in a way. If you can kill low health targets or add chip damage its great! But your primary duties are not dying, proper CD usage and keeping ur team alive.

I dont have a complete grasp of his ult yet but I agree with using it similar to bongo. Use it early, use it often. Shut down a push as it starts, combo it with certain teammates like rein fire strikes to one shot enemies or use it as a defensive ult when the engage has already occured and only u or ana can take advantage of it to increase healing output to keep ur tanks up.

Interesting point on staying on the edge of the lamp, I'll have to keep that in mind.

Maybe late, I've been maining him in high diamond, and he is really a button mash character, and you have to have a good flicking skill. What I mean is that you have to juggle between healing and shooting (obe right click on your feet - left click enemy head - heal a tank - shoot pharah etc. You constantly have to juggle your heal and dps target, otherwise it's a worse zenyatta, you really have to have both a good aim and heal focus, and you have to heal and shoot simultaneously (you can press one left between two right clicks, it won't change the heal output). This character is not good for plat and below. Lower elo team will have a hard time deciding when and how to push, how to use ults. You can't toss in an immortality field and make rein charge into it, you can't rely on a doomfist flanking coming in LoS to let them have an immo field, and you won't kill enemies yourself because of the lack of mechanical skill. This hero is all about opportunities and execution, which requires a team to capitalize on them.

So all in all, to have an impact, you have to use immo field the right time, and hit your shots on the enemies. Also, don't forget your jump, it gives you so much freedom

I just started Baptiste as I'm just coming back to the game now and something I read that make him really click for me is that you can shoot and heal at the same time. Try to line up your heals to where you can shoot an enemy as well.

I main ana, zen and lucio so I know how a support can turn games in ways that aren't directly linked to dmg or healing. My question is, how can I do that on Baptiste.
