Was There Ever Local Pushback Against Female Circumcision in Africa?
Sorry if this is overly broad, as I know female circumcision encompasses a number of different practices among different cultures across a wide geographic area. The historical narratives I've read (written by white people, for a white audience) tend to show that pushback against these practices comes from white people outside of these cultures...but is this accurate? Did the local women, parents, relatives, etc. push back against female circumcision? Were they stigmatized or ostracized for doing do?
