Will Global Ethics Help Me?

I've been considering calling the Global Ethics line for a while due to a plethora of issues, but every time I start to do it, I wonder if my issues aren't just the way the company runs and I'm just stuck in this situation for now.

When I started, I was a part time overnight merchandiser working in grocery. The work was hard, but the pay was good and the hours allowed me to work on personal projects in my off time. They offered me full-time, but I told them I would not be able to do it due to my personal interests. Work-life balance, right? Ha.

Eventually, the usual lift driver for grocery decided to cut down to two days a week and they trained me to drive a lift to take her days off. I figured that someone would cover the fifth day, but I was scheduled for five days a week and, when I raised an objection to the night manager, he said that it was what they expected when I trained on the lift. I never agreed to work full-time.

My family convinced me to stay with it so I would get benefits sooner. Around Christmas time, the store manager told me I would be eligible for them in three weeks. When that three weeks was up, I went to sign up and the system would not allow me to.

The enrollment options on the Wire were grayed out and didn't link to anything. They told me they would work on it, but it's been three months now. They blamed the night manager for not officially making me full time when he started scheduling me for five days a week and have implied that I will have to wait for open enrollment.

That night manager had been trying to help me with another issue. I am trying to move my off days to two weekdays in a row to allow me to start working on projects again with my friend who is busy on weekends.
He started working towards moving someone to grocery with me since I've been working it mostly by myself since January and he wanted to train that person on a lift so they could work the days I had been trying to get off on weekdays.

That all came to a grinding halt when the night manager was suddenly fired. The new night manager talked to us about filling out new availability sheets on his first night, but a few shifts later, we were informed that we are expected to all have seven day availability. I talked to the new night manager and told him what I had been trying to work out. He said he needed better coverage on the schedule (though they haven't hired anyone new since December) and he needed me to have two separate days off. I told him it would be hard to make that work and I needed two weekdays off in a row.

Today, I checked my schedule and he scheduled me to have Saturday and Sunday off. I feel so ungrateful because I know some people would kill to have a whole weekend off, but it's the exact opposite of what we talked about and I'm having difficulty speaking to the new night manager while controlling my anger.

So, I'm getting to the point where I don't even feel the urge to try to meet expectations anymore. I can't get insurance. I can't get the schedule I need. Our shift is severely understaffed but nobody in management is interested in hiring anyone. We don't have an HR rep anymore, so I can't talk to them. Is Global Ethics going to give a shit or should I just keep it to myself?

I'd tell it to my therapist, but I don't have the insurance to see one.

What you need to understand about this is 3 things:

1: There are SHIT candidates applying to work right now. Convicts, felons, druggies, dopers, and people with zero work history or "job hoppers" who've already been fired from Sam's for- You guessed it: Job Abandonment-3 Days No Call/No Show are the quality of people applying right now. Hiring a "warm body" isn't a good idea. That "warm body" ends up fucking over the entire Club because they waste more time and manhours having to be "babysat" or disciplined because they're a shithead who can't grow up. Or they steal from us. Or they quit when they're scheduled to open in a key area. It takes time to hire the right people.

2: Because of the overhauls they did in People - It takes twice as long to get a Background check back for an applicant. The new hire has to be signed off on, and approved by somebody at Home Office level. H.O. moved too slowly? Oh, that sucks, the brand new hire took a job offer from Target or [local grocery]

3: Market Managers keep dipping their dicks and vaginas into Club wage budgets and won't allow "swells" of budgets to hire more people. Blame the shitty Market Managers who keep sticking their organs into business that isn't theirs.

Night shift is going away. It's going to be split up into two separate shifts.

Very true, and very depressing.

Everything here is normal in retail.

EXCEPT for the full time /part time thing.

You are likely a full-time/part-time exception and if you've been working 32+ hours that WHOLE time, they should be making you FT.

Talk to the CM again and mention how long you've been at FT hours. After that, call ethics and ask for advice. ONLY mention the FT/PT part.

As far as days off and what not, this is retail and you have to be flexible if you want hours.

The FT/PT is based off of a 12 week average, 3 months in a row to qualify for FT sadly. So the bad accrual PTO is a product of greed finely tuning a policy. As for the benefits, I would research that one yourself, contact the benefits hotline. You should have been eligible after a certain period. PT benefits not as good as FT benefits obviously. As per Global ethics, no they CANNOT force you to change your availability and that is a shitty practice. You may not get all the hours you want with your availability , but since you said they aren’t hiring, it shouldn’t be a problem. They can’t force you to change it. That is an ethics issue.

How long have you been working 32+ hours per week?

Since October.

Contact global ethics. Shorten your story though. Stick to when you started working 5 days a week and ask about benefits.

The off day stuff is what it is. I rarely get two days in a row off unless I ask.

Edit: also ask about ft pto that you should've been receiving.

I believe you don't accrue FT PTO until you are keyed in as FT. They can work you FT for X weeks then PT for a week to get around making you FT

I would definitely raise the FT/PT thing to ethics. Policy is that when you have a 12 week average of 34+ hours, the manager has to either offer you full time (officially on paper) or sign an agreement that they will reduce your hours. You aren't eligible for benefits or full time PTO accrual until you are job coded as full time (you will need to sign a new job offer). Once you officially become full time, you have 60 days to set up benefits. As a part timer you can still get benefits, but you'll need to wait until open enrollment.

If the manager wishes to not offer full time because they feel you don't suit the "needs of the business" (7 day availability for example), then that is well within policy but as I previously mentioned, your hours must be cut.

Unfortunately with the split days off, that is an uphill battle. Home office wants managers to push for everyone to have open availability to be able to fill holes in the schedule, cover shifts when people take off, be able to call you in for callouts, etc. This situation will depend solely on how much your management team is willing to work with their associates.

As mentioned by others in this thread, hiring is extremely tough right now so don't think your manager isn't trying. When I was a TL my manager and I would call people in for interviews and maybe 1/5 of people actually showed up. Hell, there would only be about 10 applications in the system for cashier, when this time 2 years ago there would be 60+ to sort through.

When people do show up for interviews, they have a "no shits given attitude" and don't even dress nicely. My club manager questioned why we're hiring trash and didn't believe us until he actually sat in on a few interviews.

I've passed through the cafe during the "job fairs" that clubs hold, and was truly shocked by how some of the people who came were dressed. Ratty sweats, torn jeans, tank tops, flip flops, etc. When I interviewed, I wore slacks, dress shoes, and because it was cold, a nice sweater.

I can't read all that but if you are still working overnight, I wouldn't expect any new hires until they are about to end the overnight shift. Every Sam's overnight crew that has lost associates in last 2-3 months is busting their ass short-staffed every night. At our club it's freezer/cooler(3 associates quit in 2 week period). Instead of hiring someone they have been having daylight people work 2-3 nights and the one guy still on our crew for freezer/cooler gets overtime approved and has been getting 50-55 hrs over 6 days. And we all do what we can to help him, but he's working himself to death....Store manager pointed out all sorts of reasons, the most petty one I heard was he didn't want to give anyone the differential lol
