Does he understand me?

Hey guys sorry I'm new here so if I'm in the wrong place just let me know. Anyways, I have started to tutor a nonverbal autistic boy American Sign Language. He can grasp nouns and verbs decently well, but I'm having a hard time identifying if he is comprehending the signs or if he's just copying me? How can I be sure he is understanding me?
