New to Heathenry

First off little about myself, I'm a atheist raised christian nothing to special. I love mythos and history. I found this sub reddit threw r/Christianity of all things. In short bit tired of being on atheist sub reddit rather build bridges and just want to learn. Sad part I don't even know where to start question wise..

A lot of atheists are unfortunately really antitheist, too, so building bridges can be tough. Which is a shame, honestly, because we could be allies on many issues (for example we'd rather not have our kids indoctrinated into Christianity at school, either) Most of the regulars here are very friendly and patient with questions, so poke around and ask questions as they come to mind :D

at least on atheist sub yes for sure lol. I agree its baseless to just toss out anyone that believes in a god or gods just silly. I was born in raised in the bible belt I see enough I love jesus signs I want to die lol. at least for myself I want to get to know what I can to improve myself and maybe later others. atheism is not for everyone.

In my opinion the best thing anybody can do to be better is to try to understand others, so you're doing good so far 😄

If you must lie never do it to yourself. People first ideas second. Two thing I try hold myself to tho first one is odd I'm sure.

So you're just wanting to observe and learn, is my understanding?

I guess the first question would be to read the top pinned post in the subreddit to give yourself an idea what we're about.

I will then for sure. I have habit if staying in the new tab sorry about that.

Edit: sorry I didn't reply to your question, but yes that's basically the jest. More then that but I'm horrible at explaining.

Hey no, do not worry. Just trying to get a feel for what you want from your visit here. Don't hesitate to ask questions.

I made a edit to reply to question. I had knee jerk reaction just how you worded it. I knew you was a mod and I blame my raising on how act around authority.

welcome! I might ramble a bit but there are different ways to go about it and often it's best to take your time finding your way. All journeys start with us walking blindly onwards first, you'll find paths, knowledge, and mentors as you keep walking.

Though in general, the best places to start is reading the mythos and folklore some more. You can do this for fun or start looking at it from different angles on a personal-philosophical level. You can even just pick a random page and start from there.

You can also start your own hearth cult/altar to make offerings. It's really nice to have an altar. It can be quite creative in how to customize and change it. you can learn new skills to craft hand made objects for it too. Then spend time meditating or just talking to it, thanking the spirits and listing the good things in life you are working on or have experienced. They may even bless your 'work in progress' with good fortune. Rituals can be very therapeutic. maybe later add divination to your ritual if you wish. it's up to you. http://www.thelongship.net/hearth-cult/

I'm kind of wondering the context in which we came up in r/christianity ? I have this sneaking suspicion that a fair number of people de-convert back there once they start missing the familiar.

Lol my flair is Yggdrasil. I don't tend to go for flairs that are common and try pick things that semi agree with. My family farm house was built with oak trees planted around them all 4 are as old the house which little over 100 and some. As for going back not me lol I feel most people leave to make a path but go back to how they was raised do to being in grained into them. I spent years thinking that threw. Also my flair in r/atheist is contrarian. Lol

Hello & Welcome,

I am new to heathenry as well with a similar background but not raised as anything and have always been an agnostic with a bit of atheism sprinkled in during my younger days.

The best thing to do is read and read a lot. There is no right or wrong no doctrine or dogma to live your life by. Heck even the sagas contradict themselves. Look at it as the gods living in their own plane of existence that doesn’t make sense to our mortal minds where time and earthbound logic don’t apply.

Once you have a somewhat decent grasp on things you can dig deeper into practices/rituals. Heathenry is a very personal experience and no two rituals will be the same for different individuals. Just do what feels proper to you and based on what you know of the gods try not to offend or over step your bounds.

I hope this helps.
