Ridiculous.
Fucking ridiculous. I mean this shit is, fucking ridiculous
I’m so appalled
Spalding ball, balding Donald trump taking dollars from y'all
this will actually decide our title race
our league is a joke
We probably would have won anyway; Genk was outstanding, Club surprisingly weak
weak teams get results all the time
You're just as likable as your club is I see.
"we probably would have won" is a crock of shit, the game was tied in the 2nd half and this awful call decided it. It's the kind of crap Brazil fans used to say in 2002
I have to agree. It was a stupid pen, and if it wasn’t given, I still fancy Club to pull off a miracle, but Genk were much better and deserved the win either way.
Standard is in it. 6/6 against Genk easy
How the fuck does someone look at that and conclude it's a handball.
Ref dont wanna give it, believe me, but he have too, this will change beginning in few months, and the debate will begin again was it intentional or not, and ref have to judge it, controversy wont end
It's because of the new handball rule.
Used to be a handball was given when a player was judged to have made a deliberate extension of his arm, while now it is given when the arm is judged to be in an unnatural position. In the Belgian league handballs are almost always given when the player's arm isn't right next to their body and the ball hits it.
I can understand wanting to make the rules less open to interpretation, but this is just silly.
This is unbelievable...
Even with VAR. That's kinda sad.
If there is an official interpretation forcing this then the ref has no choice at all.
There's not though:
"The big challenge is the position of the arm. When the arm is totally out of the body above the shoulder it should be penalised. If the defender is making the body bigger in order to block the ball it is not fair.
"It is different if the defender is challenging or playing the ball and it rebounds. But if he is looking to block a cross or a shot on goal and the player is trying to spread his body then it is a handball."
"Players should be allowed to have their arms by their side because it's their natural silhouette."
These are the new guidelines and even under them it's not a handball.
Ref didn't blow it, VAR called him to review.
"clear and obvious error" my bollocks
He's the one who chose to give the penalty though.
This is a penalty according to the new handball rule, though. The problem isn't VAR or the referee, it's the rule.
The new handball rule is only in effect starting next season. So it's irrelevant there.
The decision is made in the studio, the ref just acts as if he is one doing it so he doesn't lose public authority
That's not how VAR works actually.
No that’s not how VAR works. Final decision is always down to the referee.
Nope
This is even worse than the penalty in the Bayern Düsseldorf game.
That’s sad
Referee gets someone to bet heavy on over 2.5 goals, penalty in game, X team to win. Gives penalty. Trust me, this is happening, everywhere.

Sigh...
How? That is sooo bad.
LMAO how is he even suppose to know where the ball is when it’s behind him?
Yes, this is a ridiculous rule, but it still is a rule. Rules are there to be followed, how ridiculous they can be.
Dura lex, sed lex.
And some idiots here will still claim, “that’s a stonewall PK cause thats the risk the defender’s taking by defending like that.”
Well, not this one. This is clearly not extending the arm, he's just in a running motion. When the defender extends the arm towards the ball even if he isn't looking right at the ball, it's fair to give the penalty. This one is just silly.
I think Arnold, Kimpembe and Rose's situations should be penalties. This one is silly, Mechele isn't looking at the ball, arm is close to the body and comes from a rebound.
Some of these rules are so outdated This one needs to be changed and the away goal rule need to be gone
Outdated? This is because of a brand new rule.
Really? I think I lumped it in together with rules like the away goal because I associate those kind of rules with the past. Dumb rules for the past have an excuse because it's the past I guess but how can a governing body decide in this day and age to come up with this rule?
The previous rule was that is has to "deliberate extension of the body".
Now it's when the arm is in an 'unnatural' position.
A good example is a recent case of Weigl's handball against Hertha. The ball was smashed straight towards his face and he put up his arm to protect his face, otherwise the ball would have slapped his nose.
Old rules it wouldn't have been a pen due to not being an extension of the body, in new rules it's not a 'natural' position for the hand thus was called.
That must really suck for the fans. I can't imagine losing to a bullshit penalty like that
This new handball rule is so fucking stupid, I'm a neutral and even I think this is ridiculous. You can see the ref even doubt "do I give this?" because even he knows this is messed up.
They need to change this rule asap.
Absolutely agreed, it's especially bad in La Liga this season, bullshit penalties are being called literally every match. This rule has to go, punishment doesn't fit the "crime" at all.
There is no winning.
It's either vague and subjective, and then all fans do is cry they didn't get a penalty when one was given for the exact same thing in another game. This is made more ridiculous with VAR when they review some and give a penalty and don't even review others.
Or you can take away the subjectivity and flat out say that if your arm is away from your body and it touches the ball... it's a penalty. Then you deal with nonsense like this.
I prefer this, as at least we know what is and isn't going to be given and both teams are going to be judged with the same standard. And I'm not only saying that because I'm a Genk fan.
Interpretation is part of every rule in football and VAR makes it easier for referees to review and make better decisions. Making the handball rule as black and white as this is just a recipe for disaster and makes no sense at all in this context.
If a rule is up to interpretation it is a shit rule to begin with.
Cards are kinda up to interpretation
This is an incredibly over simplistic way to look at things.
Then why do courts and lawyers exist in society?
You are only saying this because of the colour of your glasses, even if you say otherwise.
No football fan can actually look at this and conclude that this is right for the game. This rule is stupid, you can't be playing football with your arms glued to your body, it just isn't possible.
Completely agree, but while it is the rule for now, it needs to be applied correctly and evenly no matter how dumb it is.
The main issue is obviously that any foul in the box is a penalty, which is a ridiculously harsh punishment for involuntarily actions. If you remove this however, what do you do with errors in the box that were due to slipping/losing balance that were equally involuntary and equally influential? They are clear penalties regardless too, so in that line of thinking it makes sense this is too.
I'm not really sure how to solve this ... maybe two tiers of fouls in the box: the voluntary one leading to penalties, the involuntary ones to indirect free kicks? But then it['s arbitrary again. It's never not going to be a clusterfuck.
I get where he's coming from tbh. Adding room for subjectivity will also just result in the same kind of situations where there's discussion because the ref made the wrong call but this isn't a penalty. Still, it brings up a question. This isn't an intentional handball, he couldn't move his hand or anything- but what about handballs that happen for example when a player slides and uses his arms to support himself? They are given and usually noone really complains?
With a sliding player your whole body is now in an unnatural position. Standing up is unavoidable, sliding isnt. That's why you see those sliding hands penalties.
No, it isn't possible. Nobody is suggesting it is. But the rules are the same for both teams.
And stop using the no true Scotsman stuff, it makes you look like an idiot.
What new handball rule are you talking about, handling rules have been (basically) the same for the last 4 years.
They're not even using the new rules yet. It's next season when it becomes even more strict.
But bollocks to it all I say. They should get on the case asap before people turn against VAR for all these dumb penalties.

Basically the rule now states that if your arm extends beyond your "natural silhouette" and the ball hits your arm, no matter if it's accidental or not, a penalty will be given.
That’s not true. Even by the new rules this shouldn’t be a penalty. Since it states that there shouldn’t be a penalty if

But even then, the new rules only come into play next season.
There will be (but only starting June 1st) a new rule saying that a handball that leads to a goal chance will be a foul whether it is deliberate or not - there won't be any change to handballs from defenders like in the video tho.
