TPCast worth it for 150€

Hello everyone,

i have currently the option to buy an tpcast for the oculus rift for about 150 €. My questions: is it worth the trouble?

Will it be more demanding for my computer to run vr wirelessly? And is the reduced fov / green stripes on the sides of the screen noticeable or even annoying?

thank you :)

It’s not more demanding, and while you can see them if you look the bars aren’t that noticeable if you aren’t intentionally looking for them.

Whether it’s worth it is up to you, but know you might want to pay $30 more for OpenTPcast

I hear it's not as needed as before, unless you need wireless mic. But I already had opentpcast and never uninstalled it to compare

Yeah. I dunno. I just kinda went to it right away.

But I'm a big Echo VR player, so my mic is completely non-negotiable.

yeah, i can confirm that. Opentpcast is for free, you only pay for virtualhere license that redirects the usbmic. Already had factored these additional cost in, thank you

Do not buy it now. It won't work with anything but the CV1. I have one with OpenTPcast. It is far from perfect. I have shelved it

not planning to change my cv1 in the next 6 months. Can you describe me your problems you had with the tpcast?

It's just never worked that well. Out of the box, pretty bad. Lots of stutters and lag. Upgraded to OpenTPcast, bought a new router, USB 3C ethernet adapter... same problems.

Sometimes it's fine, other times it's just JUNK. I do live in a condo complex with at least 10 other 5G networks in close range. But no matter what I change the signal too it just never worked as well as corded. I am fairly confident it might work fine without the the interference, but I can't move, so that's a non-starter.

The problem was never "green borders" or anything. The FOV might be SLIGHTLY reduced but not enough it bothered me in anyway.

If you really want one, I'll sell you mine for $200. I have two batteries for it.

That's exactly why, you need to be in a NON crowded 5Ghz environment. This thing needs not only every last drop of speed but also no band interference.

Love mine. Just don't expect it to work on any headset other than what it's designed to work with.

For 150€ get it. I got mine back in December for 300€ from eBay and I love it. Cannot go back to wired. For 150 you can sell it later on and get your money back anytime.

It's definitely worth it! Wireless is great... Now is owning a cv1 worth it in 6 months? Because it wornt work on the s (or others). If you are happy with the cv1 for long enough ... You will be happy. But I'm guessing it's a bad time to I vest more into a cv1 setup. But I loved mine. And sold the bundle a bit ago

not planning to switch my cv1 any time soon :) so thank you for your opinion

I have been using it for about a year now. If you plan on getting a Rift S, I would wait for either confirmation that it works with it, or a new version that works with it. I have almost no issues with mine. I purchased a spare battery off of Amazon and just charge one while I'm using the other. Battery lasts a pretty long time, I have never run out in the same day.

As far as openTPcast, TPCast pretty much stole the code for it and included it with the firmware update for the device. You just need to flash the SD card in the TPCast. I switched back and it works pretty solid now. The TPCast software is much more reliable the using OpenTPcast with the wireless USB redirect thinggy (Cant remember what the software was called) .

I'm almost positive there is no OpenTPCast anything in the current TPCast software. They did take some parts of OpenTPCast but it was only in a beta test build of their software.

I'll look, but I'm pretty sure one of the guys that worked on OpenTPcast said he looked and they didnt even bother renaming some of the files.

I can't find the details now but at one point I asked for the specifics on the TPCast Discord and if memory serves me correctly they used some config files (not actual code) from the OpenTPCast distro in some beta test version of their software that was never official released. When they officially released a version with a working mic they did not use an OpenTPCast stuff.
