WAITLISTED AT HARVARD WITH A 159. FEELING PRETTTTTTY GOOD.

Admissions Result

Decision arrived by email today! Applied right at the deadline w/ a 159 LSAT & 3.92 GPA. 6 years of work experience, including some high profile unicorn stuff.

You’ll all make fun of me, but I’m fairly certain I’ll be headed to a T100 school so I can stay in the city I love & have put down roots in. :)

I won't make fun of you and would rather congratulate you.

But I will ask what your high profile unicorn stuff is.

I find it interesting.

How to put it vaguely, yet interestingly... I run external relations for an org involved in some v important nat'l impact litigation work. If you google my name, lots of articles come up where I'm cited?

Are you involved in MormonLeaks or the recent sexual abuse scandals of the Church? I'd imagine that would be pretty compelling as a narrative

tor612OP•

NO! BUT THAT WOULD BE SO COOL! One of my colleagues who is also ex-cult and I always talk about how we're going to be cult-busting attorneys one day.

oh did you write your PS or DS on being ex-Mormon? The most unicorny thing ever would have been if you were ex-FDLS.

That honestly doesn't sound that unicorn-y. It sounds like you do comms and you have a great GPA.

P.S. That was a very kind reply. :)

Of course! Ride that waitlist friend! I really hope you get into your #1!

You deserve some whiskey or icecream!

Yo OP, I know you may not want to hear this advice, but I think you should retake and reapply.

You’ve got the GPA, and apparently you have a good enough app to get WL’d at Harvard with a 159; even a 5 point increase on your LSAT could result in some massive doors opening for you! That WL at Harvard could possibly turn into an acceptable at Harvard if you retake in June.

But, regardless of all that, best of luck going forward!

I think this is quite sound, really good advice! The reasons I am fine foregoing Harvard (& other similarly ranked institutions) are (1) because I did the elite university thing for undergrad, (2) because I have the connections I need to get the job I'm angling for, and (3) bc I am v happy and comfortable in my little corner of the US and totally fine staying here. As someone recently told me, "you can't put a price on quality of life."

That said, I'm going to let this news sink in for a bit and see if I change my mind tomorrow. :)

Big congrats. You are clearly an amazing applicant. I agree with u/aWildGunner, though.

  1. More elite university stuff is only likely to improve your position post law school.
  2. More connections are likewise a good thing. Unless going to a top law school would lead to you burning bridges with existing connections, more of them would certainly be valuable.
  3. I felt very similarly before my last retake, and then jumped 8 points. I'd dig deep and make sure that you're not just letting comfort, caution, and familiarity get the best of you.

While I think that's almost always good advice, I'm going to say—without knowing OP's exact situation—that it sounds like retake may not be absolutely necessary in this case (though still a valid consideration). The benefit of going to a school like HLS is that without any prior network you can get a job. If OP already has a great network in the places that matter for their career path, school branding matters very little. This is mostly true if going into non-BL jobs or BL at a firm you haven't worked for before. Non-traditional applicants could have an advantage in certain non-traditional career paths.

If there's one thing I've learned about business, it's all about who you know. BL can be a little different since it's more like a machine. But it can still work somewhat like this.

Will you be practicing some sort of hybrid mormon-rabbit law?

4
tor612OP•

Probably not, but I will probably keep posting rabbit & exmo stuff on my Reddit. If you ever have questions about those two subjects, I am VERY knowledgeable. :) Those are my hobbies though... I don't post about my professional work here.

Why would we make fun of you? You’re going to law school, and you seem happy. Everyone here is so proud. Great job!
