Traumatic Nexplanon removal, but positive Kyleena insertion.
I spent 2 years on Nexplanon, but it killed my sex drive, and that was starting to really affect me. I decided to switch to an IUD.
For context, the nurse inserted the Nexplanon on the outside of my arm. I have no idea why. But I had that same nurse remove it today and she seemed surprised by where it was. It never gave me any problems because of the placement.
I’ll be honest: removing it was horrible. It took at least 25 minutes for the nurse practitioner, an assistant, AND a doctor (who she called in for back-up) to get it out of there. I felt helpless. I didn’t feel a thing, but hearing their frustration made my anxiety spike. I cried. Thank God my boyfriend was there—but even he got lightheaded from seeing it. It was extremely intense.
They gave me the option to leave for lunch and come back or to return another day if I wasn’t feeling up to the IUD insertion, but I chose to just get it over with. After the removal drama, inserting the Kyleena was no big deal. Yes, it was pretty crampy—like a deep, burning kind of crampy—but the process was brief and the cramps subsided very quickly after.
I’m very happy with my decision. I don’t think I could do that Nexplanon removal every three years! Here’s to hoping I have a positive experience with Kyleena from here on out!
