MiniDSP 2x4 HD woes

I was intrigued by the MiniDSP after hearing Zeos wax poetic about it for 45 minutes, so I went ahead and ordered one. The plan was to use it to eliminate software EQ. I was originally thinking about the Loki but the features of the MiniDSP looked amazing.

Received the unit this week and it’s been nothing but disappointment. I’ve seen some of the flakiness that others have reported but that wasn’t the main issue. No matter what I did, the sound quality was absolutely terrible. I tried PC-USB-MAGNI3 and PC-SPDIF-MAGNI3 and in both cases the sound was seemed like it was echoing and distorted.

This was with zero effects applied and everything on bypass. I even made sure all Windows effects to the DSP were disabled. It’s possible I missed a setting but I highly doubt it; went through every single option in detail. At this point I’ve spent at least 3 hours just trying to get it to match my Modi 3 with every setting bypassed and it still sounds terrible.

I have to think I’ve either got a bad unit or am doing something wrong? I can imagine subtle differences between DACs but there’s no way it should be night a day like I’m getting between the MiniDSP and Modi.

I’m about to return it but I figured I’d see if others had the same experience or any suggestions.

EDIT: Figured this out, my configuration was wrong, product is completely fine and does what it says.
